We had driven over 300 miles when we pulled into the Stage Coach Inn in Salado, Texas. Following the habits and traditions of generations of Texans, we sought rest, food, and a bath at this old coaching inn. A long time ago this was an Indian campground of the Tonkawa people at the crossroads of the old Chisholm Cattle Trail and the military road began by the Spanish explorers. A river gives the water needed by the giant live oak trees and watered thousands of horses and cattle over the years. Now the Inn is a very pleasant place to stay for a night or for a long weekend. This small cafe and bakery is a bit hard to find, tucked back as it is from Main Street in Salado, but seek it out. It offers pleasant meals in a cool atmosphere off the beaten path of throngs of shoppers. Our lunch was freshly made and tasty. We bought a bag of freshly out of the oven cookies for 'the road' (what an excuse!), and enjoyed the freshly baked bread of our sandwiches. All of the food is 'light' fare and may not please a starving husband; but it is the pleasant sort of selection sandwiches, salads, and soups that suit most shoppers—ladies, that is. If you have a hungry man to please, find a barbecue joint!Getting out of the heat in Texas in the summer is ...Read More
