A June 2005 trip
to Phuket Island by neworleanstraveler
Quote: Phuket is an island filled with both beauty and tragedy. Six months after the tsunami, life goes on, but with reminders of past events.

The entire complex could probably be seen in under an hour if you do not stay to watch the shows. Several times during the day, animal shows are presented for guests of the park. The shows presented on my visit were with elephants, crocodiles, and monkeys. I saw the elephant show and the crocodile shows and thought that the zookeepers tried to entertain, but really were just going through the motions.
The best part of my visit to the Phuket Zoo really only partially involved an animal. It seems that the idea at the Phuket Zoo is all about the "add-on". Located throughout the zoo are stations where you can "add-on" (meaning for an additional cost) photos of you with an animal. You could take a picture with an elephant, monkey, python, parrot, or a tiger...just to name a few! I decided to have my pic taken with the tiger...I figured for a few U.S. dollars it was worth it! The tiger was magnificently large and unusually docile (but it was breathing!), and my picture is tons of fun as a conversation piece. What I didn't notice, however, was the tiger handler behind me that was prodding the tiger with a stick. To put it delicately...and I don't mean to offend, but he only had one arm! (See the attached photos) How confident should I have been taking a picture with a massive tiger...when his caretaker only has one arm!!! What's up with that???
All in all, zoos aren't my idea of a good time...but I wasn't in charge of this activity, so I grinned and went along for the ride. For a family adventure, when the beaches are getting old or just for something to get away from the hustle and bustle of Patong, this could be a decent experience.
