Phuket Island is a beautiful place that is an amazing tourist mecca. Pretty much all who visit can certainly find much to do while there. The beaches obviously are a first rate attraction alone...but the blue-green waters of the Andaman Sea are the perfect complement to the sandy shores. For those not into the beach scene, I wholeheartedly recommend the following activities while in Phuket:Wat Chalong - If you spend any amount of time in Thailand you will undoubtedly see many Wats (Buddhist Temples). Phuket's version is set on an expansive campus with many holy building that are accessible to all who wish to enter. The central temple is very ornate and architecturally stunning, make your way...Read More

This is not your parent's Best Western, rest assured! The Bangtao Beach Resort and Spa is located about 25 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Patong Beach and about 40 minutes away from the airport, but it is so worth the few minutes added drive. Instead of wall to wall bodies on the beach at Patong you have a long expanse of fine sand at your disposal with few to jockey for position with. The resort is situated on the beach and all rooms have a balcony that overlooks both the magnificent pool and beach. The rooms are very large by Phuket standards and luxuriously appointed with soft bed linens and comfortable furnishings. The tile flooring was immaculately clean and such a good ide...Read More

Kalim Elephant Trekking

Kalim Elephant Trekking is perhaps not the most PETA friendly adventure that I have ever taken, but how could I pass up riding an elephant in Thailand. Kalim Trekking is set up the hillside near Patong Beach. They provide a shuttle service, but we used a taxi as it is so inexpensive and fit our time schedule better. When we arrived two elephants were taking a break in the shade eating until their hearts were content...but then we arrived and messed up the tranquility that was their siesta! Immediately they morphed into "Trekking" mode and were saddled up before we even had the opportunity to see the photo of Tiger Woods at Kalim Elephant Trekking! We selected the shorter trek of ...Read More

The Phuket Zoo is a small attraction located about 20 minutes away from Patong Beach. The zoo itself has a moderately good mix of animals and reptiles, but the setting leaves much to be desired. Cages are the choice of housing for the vast majority of the animals and they are all on the small size. I didn't see any places for the animals to move about and exercise or stretch. The entire complex could probably be seen in under an hour if you do not stay to watch the shows. Several times during the day, animal shows are presented for guests of the park. The shows presented on my visit were with elephants, crocodiles, and monkeys. I saw the elephant show and the crocodile shows and thought that th...Read More

Moken Tsunami Shelter Photo, Phuket Island, Thailand
Quote:
Phuket Island is tropical, vibrant, serene, and thousands of other adjectives that are all strikingly accurate. Yet, it is hard to believe that just 6 months earlier to the day of my visit, such painful loss and destruction was the norm.I had the opportunity to visit a temporary shelter for the Moken tribe (also referred to as the "Sea Gypsies"). This group, which is a sometimes nomadic trip, is often looked down upon by native Thais. The prefabricated metal corrugated shelter was very much like a shanty town, but the inhabitants were very appreciative of the temporary government housing. I was amazed by the use of metal, since in the Phuket summer heat the buildings seemed insuffe...Read More
