Baltimore and it's suburbs are an intriguing mix of inner city, tourist area, farmland and horse country. We moved to Maryland in 1993, and settled in an old farmhouse in Darlington—about 30 minutes north of Baltimore—in Harford County. To the casual traveller, Baltimore is all about crabs and baseball (two of our leading exports). But to the more experienced visitor, Baltimore is the city "hub" of a thriving metro area that coexists (not necessarily peacefully) with neighboring farmland. The majority of land in the counties surrounding Baltimore is still in agriculture, but the development envelope continues to spread into the countryside. In my home county, Harford, we have...Read More

The Union Hotel is one of our favorite places to eat, when it's just the two of us. The log building dates back to about 1790, and it has been fully and authentically restored. The owners live upstairs (so they say), and the downstairs dining area has the whopper-jawed floors that you would expect in a 200-plus-year-old building. Two small rooms, to your left as you enter, are available for private parties (each will serve 12-15, I'd guess). A smallish public room directly to your right has about 8 tables, the large public room further to the right probably will seat 60 folks. The staff all wear period clothing (e.g. colonial period), and are both polite and knowled...Read More

Some reviews slam the Blue Agave for lousy service. But that's not the case with me.Perhaps other guests are just in too much of a hurry. That's a mistake at some restaurants, particularly those that pride themselves in what they serve. We ALWAYS have a great meal, and GREAT (!!!!!) Tequila at the Blue Agave. Particularly the Tequila part.Blue Agave is the only restaurant (I've found) that serves this many different bottlings of tequila—there must be 100!Before you eat, and while you eat, and after you eat . . . and you don't even need to eat!The Blue Agave has a SAMPLER menu for Tequila! Choose from different "flights" of tequila,...Read More

Aquatica Restaurant

We had dinner last night at Aquatica, the only Zagat-rated restaurant in Havre de Grace, and I can tell you we're going back! The location is pedestrian - wedged between a Motel 8 and an auto repair shop. The building itself appears to have previously been a house. But wait until you step inside! It's tastefully decorated, with waiters and waitresses going about their business with quiet efficiency. With a fully stocked bar, and an amazing wine list, Aquatica provides more than enough liquid lubrication. But it's the menu, hon, that really strikes a chord. And, or course, the superb manner in which the dishes are prepared.I got the Chili Lime Crab Cake appetizer - w...Read More

Cal Ripken and his family built a beautiful minor-league stadium about ten minutes from my home. Ripken Stadium, in Aberdeen, MD, is said to be the most beautiful minor league stadium in the Country! It's modeled after Baltimore's Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles (for which Cal played his entire career). Cal invested heavily in the design and construction, along with some help for the City of Aberdeen, and constructed a family-friendly stadium that seats 6,000.Ripken Stadium is surrounded by little league ball fields, including "Cal Sr's Yard," named for Cal Ripken Senior. Youth league championships are played at Cal Sr's Yard, to the delight of players and their families....Read More

Growing up in the shadow of Philadelphia, my childhood memories of live professional baseball were marked by the likes of Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts and the Philadelphia Phillies. Playing in old Connie Mack Stadium—a dark and claustrophobic place that always smelled of cheap cigars. After that, and until we moved to Maryland in the mid-1990s, I had not set foot in a professional baseball stadium. But we were so intrigued by the new stadium for the Orioles, Camden Yards, that we started going to games. It helped that some guy named Cal Ripken was at the time approaching his Ironman record!Camden Yards is an engineering marvel. It appears to be a classic turn-of-the-cent...Read More

Darlington Apple Festival

On the first Saturday in October there is usually an early fall mist in the morning air. Not exactly a fog, but a low-hanging mist that starts to lift shortly after sunrise. As the mist begins to dissipate, a miracle arises like the legendary Brigadoon. White Tents start to appear, the smell of apples fills the air, and the crowds come. And more. And more.Because on this day, this magical day, the village of Darlington (population 1,000) opens its doors to the entire Eastern Seaboard for the Darlington Apple Festival. On a sunny day, some 70,000 people will visit Darlington. On a rainy day, as few as 40,000. And the famously anti-development citizens of Darlington (o...Read More
