Wedding Planning in Tuscany

Overview

We travelled to Italy last September to make some arrangements for our wedding this August. We had decided that we would honeymoon in Italy (after some help from IgoUgo members, thank you!) and we decided also to get married in Italy. We wanted to have a small non religious wedding in a small town. After searching possible destinations we decided on Certaldo Alto in Tuscany. We had both visited Tuscany before, but we had never been to Certaldo. All we knew was from photographs we had seen on the Internet, but it looked to be a really nice place. We booked our accommodations at Il Pianigiano, a B&B in Certaldo Basso. We had planned nothing else before we arri...Read More

We found this B&B before we arrived in Italy. We were travelling with a car and one important thing for us was to find accommodations with free and safe parking (not so common in Italy.)Il Pianigiano is not so easy to find, especially if you arrive late in the evening. It was dark when we arrived in Certaldo and we had to telephone the B&B for someone to give us more directions. Actually, they came to meet us and we followed them back. When we woke in the morning, from our window it looked like we were in the middle of the countryside, yet we were just 10 minutes walk to Certaldo town. The B&B is managed by a family. The husband and wife speak only Italian but...Read More

One of the nights in Certaldo, we ate at Il Castello. This will be where we have our wedding meal so we were also trying to decide on our wedding menu this night.Il Castello is a small hotel (they have just 12 rooms). It was the beautiful Palazzo Scoto di Semifonte covered with climbing ivy at the top of the funicular in Certaldo Alto. You can eat inside, but it was a beautiful evening so we chose to eat out in the garden. In the middle of the garden is a fountain which at night is lit up and looks very pretty. There is a family of turtles living here also. From the garden you can see down into Certaldo and over to some of the other towns in the area. The view is ...Read More

Day Trip to Siena and San Gimignano

Story/Tip

Again, as we were looking for activities for our wedding guests, we made a few day trips to local places. One day we visited Siena and San Gimignano. Much of Tuscany (indeed Italy) was originally under Etruscan rule, including Siena, later a Roman colony called Sena Julia. In the Middle Ages, Siena was a very important town, as much as Florence. There is much of historical importance to see in Siena, and it is one of the most popular towns in Italy to visit. It was built on three hills and is a well preserved medieval town with typical Tuscan narrow cobble streets and lots of churches. The Piazza del Campo is one of Italy's most beautiful medieval squ...Read More

None of our wedding guests live in Italy, so we wanted to get some ideas of activities for guests while they are in Certaldo. Most of our guests will be staying in Certaldo for the week.We had travelled to Certaldo by car, and one day we drove around the Chianti region, stopping in several of the Chianti towns and tasting wine and olive oil. (For our guests, we plan to hire a bus and make the same journey.)The Chianti Region in Tuscany is one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. There are many tiny villages and towns and the entire area has many olive groves and vineyards. There are lots of small villages in the Chianti Region, some local people will say only the ...Read More
