To me, summertime on PEI means Victoria Park in Charlottetown. I grew up outside of Charlottetown and we used to go to play at the playground, for a drive around the harbour and to stop at the cannons to play. It is even better when the ice cream stand is open.Charlottetown is the birthplace of Canada, so check out Province House—where Canada was born. Even the kids can get interested in history while in a building where the stone floor is worn down by over a century of use.Charlottetown is a historic city with a mish-mash of old and new buildings. The tallest building on the Island is a 6-story tall hotel. There are new office buildings being put up all over the place, the cit...Read More

My mother, the baby and I went to Rodd's for the Hip-o-Beef lunch buffet. Having grown up on PEI, we remembered the Charlottetown Hotel as a nice, table cloth restaurant. The dining room decor is lovely as we remember, and as it should be in a grand-old hotel. Chandeliers on the ceiling, linen napkins folded into fans, arm chairs, five or six utensils at each setting, etc. Granted, they let us in wearing T-shirts and jeans, so it isn't a five star or anything, but it's nicer than we usually do.The service, however, reminded us of when I was a kid—specifically of watching Grover be a waiter on Sesame Street. Our server was nice enough, but...When we first ...Read More

The the 3 kids and I went with my mom to Smitty's for a quick dinner on Saturday. Mom and I split a hot-turkey sandwich. The 8 year old had pizza as usual, and the 3 year old had a strawberry waffle. (We had just ate cake about an hour before we went.)We've been to several Smitty's restaurant, and we like them OK. The 3 year old loves getting to order breakfast at supper-time (OK, so do I). We go here because everyone can have what they want. The hot-turkey sandwich was a special that day and came with a beverage, veggies and potato for $9. The kids meals all came with a drink and a cookie conveniently sealed in a plastic bag to take home. The breakfast choices are $4 (waffle, p...Read More

We always head to the Magic Wok for the Chinese buffet when we are in Charlottetown. Having grown up eating PEI egg rolls, I find that no other egg rolls taste right. We got to the buffet around 6:15pm and the place was just about full. We took the last large table in the corner. Normally we arrive around 5pm when things are just getting started, so this was unusual to us.The group was my mother, my mother-in-law, the 8 year old, the 3 year old, the baby and me. We all had the buffet which cost $11 for adults, $5.50 for the 8 year old, and $2 for the 3 year old, and free for the baby.We immediately asked for a bowl of steamed rice for the baby which arrived quickly,...Read More

Ponderosa Steak House is more famous for its salad bar than its steak. They have one of the biggest salad bars around with a wide variety of hot and cold items. We usually print coupons from the internet before we go here (www.steakandsalad.com) but we forgot them this time. The special was a steak with salad and ice cream for $10, but since we don't like the ice cream, we opted for the salad bar alone.Adults are $7, seniors $6.50, kids $5. The kids buffet comes with a fountain drink and ice cream. A toddler dinner is free. At the Ponderosa in Bedford NS, a toddler must be shorter than the counter, so the 3 year old has had to pay for the last year, but in Truro they go by age a...Read More

Curly's was highly recommended for cheap good food in large portions. We got our meal and it was OK, but didn't live up to the raves we had heard.Mom had the liver and onions, which was excellent for me because it meant she won't want to cook it for a while. She enjoyed it, but the 3 year old didn't like the bite of it she tasted. It came with two large scoops of mashed potatoes, and a small tub of gravy on the side. It also came with some frozen veggies and coleslaw. Cost $7.I was tempted by the hot turkey sandwich, but having had that the night before, I decided to have the chicken cheesesteak sandwich. It was chicken and cheese on a slice of garlic bread. It also ...Read More

The Confederation is a great deal of fun for traveling back and forth to PEI, but you do need to plan for it.The boat leaves on a bizarre schedule, so you should check ahead on the website http://www.peiferry.com/route_schedule/index.php, or my preferred method .. calling (800)565-0201. You can even ask someone what the traffic situation is like if you call them. The Confederation is one of the newer boats making the crossing from Wood Islands PEI to Caribou NS. It has three car decks and two passenger decks. The cost is $49 per car, passengers included, more if you have a camper or something. You are not allowed to stay in your car during the crossing, but that's ok, you'd miss ...Read More

Victoria Park in Charlottetown reminds me of when I was little. The playground has some of the same equipment from 30 years ago, but lots of other equipment has been replaced with new climbing structures. (Thank goodness!)There is a swimming pool and a toddler sprinkler, which is only open in the summer. The playground has several swings, slides, and even teeter totters, but the old monkey bars and roundabouts are long gone. There is lots of sand under the equipment. The park seems to be fairly clean. There is a forest in the park, which I haven't gone into in years. There was a pond in the middle which as kids we called "Dead Man's pond," and of course we had...Read More

We decided to stop here on the way home from PEI. It was a beautiful day and the kids had been cooped up in the car for quite some time. The price was $4 adults, $1.50 ages 6 and over, and under 5 is free (or $10/family). The park was open until 7pm, which was useful information because it was almost 4pm when we got there. The spring is a great time of the year to go here because there were lots of animals out and about, including many babies. The Wildlife Park is run by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.More information is on their website at http://wildlifepark.gov.ns.ca/.It is a good idea to bring a water bottle, bug spray, sunscreen, and really ...Read More
