I lived in Lexington for 3 months and did a little bit of travelling in the surrounding area, so this list highlights what I managed to enjoy during my stay here. Not all of the activities mentioned are completely local to Lexington.Highlights include:Mammoth Cave - The longest cave system in the world.Chicago Marathon - One of the top 5 mass-participation marathons in the world.Labrot & Graham Distillery - Kentucky is world famous for it's Bourbon Whiskey, so it would be rude not to visit at least one of the factories during your stay here.A Horse Farm.Keeneland Races - The most picturesque racecourse I have visited. An American football or basketball game at Un...Read More

Well I have been over in the US now for a few days, and I already have enough stories to fill a small book! It wasn't the best of starts getting across in the first place, as after a sleepless night at the airport, they decided to cancel my flight, which meant being put on a later flight to a different airport and then having to catch another flight to Louisville where I was meeting Candace—I wasn't happy!!!  Managed to finally get home late Wednesday night, and as Candace had lectures on the Thursday, I decided to explore the local vicinity. What was a small walk, turned into a 3 hour mission to find my way back home as somehow I managed to get completely lost, and as it seems absolutely no-...Read More

I am one broken male after the weekend and the Chicago Marathon, and to say I'm gutted would be a bit of an understatement! I managed to finish it in 4 hours and 4 minutes, which although is my best time ever, is annoyingly close to getting under 4 hours like I had planned. I was still on for a sub 4 hour time as well, up until only a mile left, and just needed a 10 minute mile to finally succeed, but some knob head decided to put a huge hill right at the finish and spaghetti legs kicked in, so even though I could see the finish line in site, it just wasn't meant to be! If I didn't manage to twist my ankle 20m after the start and then need the toilet 50m later, it could have been a different story!! ...Read More

Another week and a few more tales to tell!  As seems to have been the norm over the past few weeks, the weekend saw yet another run, this time the Louisville Half Marathon. I wasn't even bothering trying to get a good time for this, just completing it was more than enough, which I managed to do in 1 hour 58 minutes, so finally the '2 marathons and 2 half marathons in 6 weeks' episode is over with. There is another marathon down my road in 2 weeks time, but I think I will be giving that one a miss (although the attention received for being English in this one could still see my mind being changed)!!!  Running in Louisville meant spending a weekend at the in-laws, which isn't quite as ...Read More

Week 04 - A Day at the Races (USA)

With the first draft of my thesis needing to be handed in this Friday, it has meant a pretty boring week of working hard and little play. This hasn't stopped me doing a few things of interest though, most notably a day at the races. I thought it would be rude not to participate in such an activity, seeing that I am living in 'the Horse Capital of the World'!! Unfortunately I didn't have the same luck as I encountered at the Grand National earlier in the year, ending up $7 down on my original stake, but when you consider it only cost $3 to get into the race course, then you really cant complain for a full days entertainment (yep, I was stingy enough not to buy any food or drink to c...Read More

As I didn’t have that much planned to do this week, I was hoping it was going to be a short entry, but it really hasn’t turned out like that at all! The week didn’t get off to the best of starts, as I was talking to one of my girlfriends Uncles and he started laughing when I said the word ‘university’. When I asked why, he replied that I sounded just like Mrs. Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances (what an insult—an even bigger insult is that Keeping Up Appearances is the most popular English comedy programme over here!!!). Things didn’t get any better later in the day when, while I was out shopping I spotted a 60-year-old woman wearing the identical pink polo shirt that I was wearing (I pull...Read More

Week 06 - Intruders in the Night (USA)

Well, it has been a very quiet week! The biggest event was being a whisker away from a passing tornado. Actually I lie, I was 200 miles away from it, but it's probably the closest I will ever get to being in ones path! My girlfriend knew a few people in the town where it hit, but luckily they were all okay. As I said, it has been a pretty non eventful week, the most action that I have encountered has been in the bedroom, and my poor girlfriend has been on the receiving end of this, and by this I'm not trying to be dirty and sexual in any way!! Unfortunately my mind has been a little on the overactive side, giving me a few very realistic nightmares. One night last week I dreamt I was being atta...Read More

Not a lot going on this week, apart from the crazy weather that we have been having! At the start of the week, there were forest fires, and now at the end we are having tornado warnings, horrendous storms and in the space of a single day, the daytime temperature has dropped from 24 degrees to 4 degrees! There might even be a little snow later as well!! Had the pleasure of attending my first gig in the US, seeing Bright Eyes, Feist, and Magic Numbers (apparently their first U.S. gig, but a fair few of the crowd already seemed to know the words to their songs!). Both Magic Numbers and Feist (Leslie Feist, the lead singer use to be in Placebo, but don't judge Feist entirely on this fact!) were wo...Read More

Well, another interesting week, although it seems that events this time centred on both drunkenness and freebies! The actual week was a quiet affair, the highlight was managing to do my girlfriends Birthday and Xmas shopping in just over an hour—not bad going at all. I have to say that I shop like the typical male and normally buy the first thing that I see, although it always happens to be the perfect present(s) I see first. It must just be good luck! Friday night was an interesting affair, as Lexington was holding something called a 'Gallery Hop', where all the art exhibits and art centres opened their doors for 3 hours allowing people to view all the art at the same time, while offe...Read More

Week 09 - As Good As Christmas? (USA)

I think throughout my time in the U.S. this week has been the most enjoyable, mainly down to Thanksgiving shenanigans. I'll come to those shortly! The night before Thanksgiving was spent at a local gig in Lexington. I wasn't really fancying going out the night before Thanksgiving, but I'm very glad I did. The main act was a guy called Will Hoge and seeing that he is signed to a big label (Atlantic) I was surprised he was willing to play to no more than 100 people on the eve of Thanksgiving. Although he was good, it was the support that impressed me the most, a group called Actress. They were very much like The Killers and in my opinion just as good! So if they ever make it big, you know w...Read More

It has been a week of much work and little play, so I think this will be the shortest entry I have written so far! The highlight of the week was obviously my girlfriend's birthday. I cannot believe at the age of 24 I had never bought either a Birthday or Xmas present for a girl before, but I think my girlfriend was more than happy with the presents I bought for her, and the meal I took her out to. Out of the presents I bought her, including a pair of ruby and white gold earrings, I think the one she liked the most was the packet of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes I managed to get smuggled into the country! If I had known she would be this easily pleased I could have saved myself a small fortune! I...Read More

It's been a blast from the past this week, like a trip back to my University as for the first time in months copious amounts of drinking have been taking place. With Christmas very fast approaching and with the Universities around here finishing, I thought it would be rude not to join in the drinking festivities that have been taking place. I had the pleasure of going out drinking with my girlfriend and some of her friends a few nights this week, and I quickly realised that my drinking tolerance levels had weakened considerably since being in London. Now three pints is more than enough for me becoming a menace! Luckily I was well behaved through my drunkenness, with the worst ac...Read More

Well my last week in the U.S. before returning to England will go down as one of the hardest weeks of my life. Of course it did have its benefits such as having a 'fake Christmas' with my girlfriend as we couldn't spend the real Christmas together, and also house sitting at my girlfriends parents house and eating them out of house and home. But I would say the hardest thing that I have ever done in my life was going to the airport to leave for England knowing that I wouldn't be seeing my girlfriend for 4 months. The emotions that were going through me as we parted at the airport have never been so intense in all my life, and I would have done anything not to leave. It was a very emotional and ...Read More
