Overview

Quote:
Ottawa's Byward Market is a hotbed of activity, and rightly so. This area of the nation's capital has always had an eccentric mix of businesses and restaurants. The Byward Market is located in historic Lowertown situated ‘below' Parliament Hill. The area gets its name from the Byward Market building in the heart of the district. This building was home to merchants hawking their wares. The area was also home to the labourers who really built this city. It was also home to the more seedy side of life with bars and brothels littering the area. The Byward Market became known as the party area and developed a less than stellar reputation as tourists were...Read More

Oh So Good! is an appropriately named and popular destination for dessert and chocolate lovers, me included. This place was so popular, it had to move from its smaller location to another spot in The Market. Now located at 25 York Street (just off Sussex), it is even closer to all the action and easier to locate. What is not to like about this place if you love dessert and chocolate? I cannot think of anything, really. Oh So Good! makes all of its desserts in-house and you can tell by the way they look and taste! The huge display case is full of multi-layered cakes and tortes, cheesecakes, tarts, and other baked goodies. I've been here multiple times and I have a difficult tim...Read More

I discovered this Market gem during the Great Blackout of 2003. Grocery stores were still closed, all the food in my fridge had spoiled, and power was sporadic at home. My sister was visiting from out west and we desperately needed to find somewhere to eat. She and her boyfriend had been out the day before and passed by Vittoria Trattoria noting that they had power and the place was full of patrons. Our first thought was ‘Yeah, food!' followed quickly by ‘Ah, air-conditioning!'We headed out on Sunday morning for the 10am to 2pm brunch happy simply to have found somewhere to eat. We were soon very impressed by the decor, staff and the food. I have since been back a few times i...Read More

Located at the corner of Dalhousie and York, right in the heart of The Market, Presse Café is a welcome addition to the dining and coffee choices available. I always intended to drop in to pick up a coffee and check out the place after it opened but just never got around to it. That was until my parents came for a visit and they stopped in. After that, I had to drop in myself. The result: a very happy customer, pleased with the choice of coffee, food, and the welcoming decor. The one thing I dislike most about coffee places is that they offer nothing more substantial than muffins or cake to eat with that cu...Read More

If you fancy a drink somewhere a little more sophisticated than the pubs that seem to dominate Ottawa, eighteen is the place to try. When it opened about three years ago eighteen was the place to see and be seen. It has hosted charity fundraisers attended by the wealthy and was a featured meeting place in a made-for-tv political thriller. Luckily for us non-wealthy types, the novelty of eighteen has worn off and you can enjoy this establishment without a reservation.eighteen offers an interesting juxtaposition of old and modern, much like the Market area of Ottawa itself. Situated in an old building, the stone walls and old windows blend perfectly with glass and sleek dark wo...Read More
