A quaint town near Rotterdam, Delft is the home of Delftware, the blue and white ceramic that was originally a duplicate of Chinese porcelain. Ironically, souvenir shops all over now sell fake Delftware made in China.Delft can be visited in a day on foot. The main square, within walking distance of the train station, is bordered by the town hall and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), which contains the crypt of the Dutch royal family. You can climb the tower but we opted to save our legs for simply walk around.Next-door to the Nieuwe Kerk is the most central and convenient workshop to see Delftware being produced. In this one of a kind park in the world, tulips of all sorts and colors bloom by the millions in the 2 months of the year that it is open (usually) from the third week of March to the third week of May.The gardens are a veritable sea of color. Leiden is a pretty town with a lot of history and character. On a sunny afternoon, we decided to walk the "Leidse Loper" route, a signposted walking tour that took us past most of the historical sites in Leiden. Over the course of 2 hours, learnt about the first tulips that were brought to the Netherlands, and a man-made hill used to retreat to if the land flooded (the Burcht).We also took some time to visit the following museums:The Molen de Valk (windmill of the Falcon) is lets you get up real close to a working windmill.
