At Home in Wichita, Kansas

Overview

Quote:
I have lived in Wichita for 7 years and continue to find new and fun things to do. There are things for the family and well as for adults. Whether you enjoy opera, plays, sports, science or shopping, Wichita has something for everyone.Oldtown is the place to go. It is a refurbished area of businesses, lofts, shops, and dining. There is also quite the nightlife there with dance clubs and bars.If you enjoy comedy shows or plays, there are plenty to chose from. Our favorite is Mosley Street Melodrama. Good clean fun with a western twist with BBQ before the show. You also have Crown Uptown and Cabaret. The summer will bring Wichita Music Theatre which is 5-6 shows with a Broadway feel....Read More

Mesa

Restaurant | "La Mesa"

Quote:
La Mesa is a local, family-owned dining experience. The atmosphere caters to families, groups or couples. The decor is bright, cheery with Mexican accents. Chips and salsa are brought to each table upon arrival. The salsa leaves much to be desired. It is cooked salsa with little flavor. They have the best cheese dip and freshly made guacamole ($3-4 dollars each). They have a full bar and very strong mixed drinks. Wednesday is $1.99 margarita night. My husband likes the beef enchiladas with the cheese sauce instead of the red sauce ($8.99 for 2 enchiladas, a taco, rice). I have had the enchiladas (beef), tacos, taco salad and the fajitas. All are equally good. The cheese enchiladas was not very good, i...Read More

Jimmie's Diner

Restaurant

Quote:
Blast back to the past while you enjoy the look and feel of the 1950s, in this diner that has been a Wichita staple for decades. Order a juicy hamburger, sandwich or Mom's meatloaf, and get served by Peggy Sue, Mary Lou or Sugar. They serve the best malts, shakes and cherry limeade made by a real soda jerk. Breakfast is served all day with the best silver dollar pancakes around. If you visit on a weekend morning expect a wait, it is just that popular. Two can eat breakfast for about $12-15 and dinner can be as inexpensive.

Legend's Restaurant & Club

Restaurant | "Legend's Restaurant & Club at the Hilton Airport"

Quote:
For a nice evening out, my husband and I like to visit Legend's for a little pampering and good food. The dining caters to adults with a full bar, candlelight, and excellent service. Our favorite time to visit is on Friday night when they have a Prime Rib buffet. For about $18 per person you can sample the numerous salads, peel and eat shrimp, veggies, fish, chicken, pasta, prime rib, and the desserts. The homemade bread pudding is creamy, rich, and very enjoyable. On Thursday night there is a Mexican buffet and Saturday night is a seafood buffet. Of course there is a menu to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I also tell my friends and clients that Legends is a great place to go.

Panera is a quaint bistro that also is a bakery. The sandwiches are made with fresh breads made on site daily. They serve salad, soups and sandwiches. I love everything and have tried nothing I have not liked. My favorite is the pick-two, you choose two items for $6. It is a favorite for the nurses and friends to go on the weekends. You also can just get bagels, breads or pastries if you want. Everything is great and very recommended.

Old Chicago

Restaurant

Quote:
I enjoyed this place before, but now I think I love this place because it is where I first met my husband. More of a restaurant than a bar, Old Chicago is known for the pizza. They do have salads, sandwiches, soups, and other entrees, but their pizza is the best by far. The atmosphere is fun and casual as seen by the people playing pool, watching sports, and laughing. If you like to sample beers this is really the place for you. If you sample each of beers on the menu, you get a T-shirt. This is a great place for families, groups, or couples and a must for a casual visit to Wichita.

My husband and my favorite place to visit. You will leave feeling like you have been entertained. This melodrama has a western feel and is good clean, family fun. They serve barbecue before the production and is worth the $24 for the dinner and show, seniors are $20 and kids are $18. There are tickets for just the show available. The melodramas change throughout the year and are followed by a musical review. These people are talented. Most are local but there are a few that have performed on Broadway or at least off-Broadway. There website is www.mosleystreet.com, check it out.

For the price of a $5 button, you can have family fun for a full week. During the second or third week in May each year, Wichita has a festival that has a wide range of activities. You may choose to see a play, listen to a concert, or watch the bathtub races. The week begins with a pancake breakfast and a walk/run on Saturday. You may then want to choose to visit Cowtown or Botanica, for free with the button. Nighttime brings theme nights: Cajun, Country & Western, and Broadway just to name a few. For the sport fans, you can participate in softball or golf tournaments. There are so many activities for the kids, and they will be happy and tired by the end of the day. Last but not least, t...Read More

The Wichita Gardens

Attraction | "Botanica - The Wichita Gardens"

Quote:
This is my favorite place to visit in Wichita during the spring and early summer. Of course you may visit all year and see fall flowers, the winter brings blooms from the sun rooms. Botanica is an oasis of beauty and serenity where you can just walk slowly through the many exotic and native flowers housed in a collection of gardens. You may experience the Butterfly Garden where thousands of butterflies, of many different kinds, float breathlessly in mid-air. Or visit the Rose Garden and breath in the pungent aroma of the most lovely roses in the world. Feed the Koi fish at the Water Garden and watch the frogs leap from lily pad to lily pad. The Wildflower and Cactus Gardens are unique and different fr...Read More

Being from Oklahoma I do enjoy Country music and a two step now and then. Graham's is where we like to boot scoot. They have a large dance floor two bars for your drinking pleasure in Denim & Diamonds. But if you like other music, this is also the place to go. Graham's has five clubs under one roof. I have never done this, but you may dance in a cage in the Bell-bottoms-Disco area. It looks like something out of James Bond. Zazoo is a top 40 dance area and for those of you who like to sing or just want to watch someone sing (mostly drunk) then visit the Allcats Karaoke Show bar. Only one cover charge for all five areas. A fun time.

Growing up in a rural area, I really missed farm fresh produce until I found the Farmer's Market at the Farm and Art Plaza in Oldtown. The market runs from May to October on Saturday mornings from 7am - noon and features booths from surrounding states. Watch out, you may spend all morning browsing the sampling of items from veggies, arts & crafts, bakery goods, cheese, meats and information booths. If you like to cook like I do, join the masses at the Chef's Table where you can watch a local chef cook a tasty dish using fresh produce from the market. There is also live music to serenade you and a children's corner to keep the kids busy and entertained. To learn more about the market check out their we...Read More
