Modesto is famous for George Lucas' movie "American Graffiti". However, the movie was filmed not in Modesto, but in Petaluma. Paradise Road runs through town out to the country leading to the modern day street drag strip of California Road. A short distance away from California, is Gates Road, that was used as an illegal drag strip until just a few years ago when they started building houses along it.Modesto used to host a "Graffiti Night" every year where all the classics and hot rods would cruise McHenry all night long. Unfortunately, by 1993, the Modesto Police could not contain the few fist fights that had happened and the city banned the cruising. There are still car shows at the beginning of sum...Read More
Mallard's Restaurant Photo, Modesto, California
Quote:
Mallard's restaurant is one of the better dining establishments in Modesto. Sunday brunch is really pretty good and surprised me. I was expecting it to attempt to serve really complex and fancy food that didn't live up to the hype, but Mallard's has consistently served good quality food. The dining area is very clean, and the staff is dressed well, and they are polite and very helpful.

Mallard's is one of the best places to eat in the area.

The engines rumble as you pull out of pit road and head for the track. Tires squealing and banging gears to get out in front, you are blindsided by another car. Wham! You smack the wall hard, and you hear a cackle and a laugh from the car next to you. It brings back a memory, "rubbing is racing." Isn't that what they said in "Days of Thunder?"At Modesto Virtual, you and up to seven other people can race side by side without putting yourself or your own car at risk. Do you have a friend that talks about how great they can drive? Challenge them on a wide variety of NASCAR courses and see if they have the right stuff. My friends and I took our girlfriends out for a night of racing, and som...Read More

P. Wexford's Pub

Attraction | "P Wexford's"

Quote:
P Wexford's is the Irish bar in Modesto. There may be others that say they are, but Wexford's has done a good job of mixing a pub styled atmosphere with a relaxing place for a drink with friends. During St. Patrick's Day, Wexford's is packed wall to wall. They used to have a big tent in the parking lot that held the overflow. I didn't get to check it out this year, as I was on vacation at the time. Wexford's features Guinness and some of the best appetizers around. They usually have live music and if not, a jukebox filled with great choices awaits your coins. They even serve a good burger that goes well with a black and tan.

Sidelines has been consistently one of the best night spots to visit in Modesto for the past ten or more years. Nightclub come and go, but Sidelines has stood the test of time by featuring good live music, comedy nights, sports nights, and even allows dancing. Modesto has to issue a "dancing permit" for a business to allow dancing, and if the city leaders don't like a nightclub, they merely revoke the permit. Sidelines has a good amount of bouncers to keep people under control when they drink too much, so Sidelines has been allowed to operate by the city. The crowd is usually 30-somethings looking for a date, but also making up a smaller portion are some college-aged people. This is the...Read More

George Lucas Plaza

Attraction

George Lucas Plaza Photo,

The man responsible for such greats such as the Star Wars and the Indiana Jones legacies also made one of the coolest movies about cruising of all time. The movie? American Graffiti! The tag line was "Where were you in '62?" and George Lucas was in Modesto, California, at that time. Here in George Lucas Plaza stands a bronze statue of two teenagers leaning against the fender of a '57 Chevy. If you have never seen the movie, and you like classic cars, look it up. This "plaza" is really just a spot of concrete that the city decided to honor George Lucas with. It sounds better than it actually is. You cannot get over there to see it, as the traffic is way too heavy in that a...Read More
