Looking to plan a weekend getaway in the middle of a cold New York winter, friends suggested Jim Thorpe, which has a Murder Mystery weekend at The Harry Packer Mansion. Located in Northeastern Pennsylvania near the Pocono’s, Jim Thorpe is not only an educational trip but also an extremely relaxing one! Originally known as Mauch Chunk (pronounced Mo Honk- Indian for Bear Mountain) this tiny town became one of the wealthiest towns in America during the middle a1800’s boom in railroading, canal trade and coal shipping. We arrived late so after checking in we walked down the hill to the diner (yes, a real diner that looks like a train car!) for dinner and was greeted with warm smiles and hello’s by everyone. The weekend at the B&B great! The Murder Mystery game done by the owners of the B&B was great fun while at the same time we discovered the history of the town. We spent Saturday afternoon, walking through town looking at monuments, the railroad, and even stopping in to taste wine at one of their local vineyard stores. This quaint town that gave us the feeling that we fell back in time is a must to visit.

Quick Tips:

Try to travel during the light hours; it is a very hilly town and can get confusing. Bring proper shoes and bundle up in the winter...it gets cold! Bringing your bikes up for the warmer seasons would be a great way to get around.

Best Way To Get Around:

Once there, walking, bikes - best way to do it.
This restored mansion that preserved many of its original features is stunning! High ceilings, ornate decorations, hardwood floors, situated on top of the hill overlooking the town. Most rooms have queen-size beds, private baths. If you go during their Murder Mystery weekend the rooms are a bit more money but a formal dinner is include on Saturday Night – it was delectable!
