From Rothenburg to Dinkelsbuhl on the Romantic Roa

A June 2000 trip to Rothenburg by marciadarnell

These two frequently visited towns are so charming that one forgets all the other tourists and just has a good time viewing the architecture and visulaizing life in the 14th century.

In Rothenburg, walk on the town wall, stroll the streets, visit churches, and shop for Chirstmas decorations all year long. In Dinkelsbuhl, view the lovely stream beside the town walls, and visit shops and museums. In the small towns in between, stop for lunch or a cold beer in the village inn, and see life from another perspective.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

There is a tourist bus which has a hop-on, hop-off feature. You pay one price and stay anywhere you please. It is also nice to rent a car to travel the Romantic Road.

Once inside Rothenburg, the streets are pedestrian only during daytime hours. Both towns are best viewed on foot. The cobblestone streets make sturdy shoes a priority.

Hotel

Since the entire town makes a living from tourism, many of the residents rent thier extra beds to tourists. Just look for a sign that says zimmer frei(empty bed). The Tourist Office also has a list of about 35 places to stay with a local family.

Hotel

Unlike the rest of Europe, Bavaria limits use of Youth Hostels to those 26 or under. The price for a bed is just $9.00 per night.

Muhlaker 1 Rothenburg, Germany

We had stopped at a small inn on the road between Rothenburg and Dinklesbuhl for lunch, and we enjoyed it so much we decided to try a similar one for an overnight arrangement. Indeed, this little inn, with cheerful rooms which looked just like they were from a German fairytale, was a real delight. It was exceedingly clean.

Inn at InsingenBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This little town of a few hundred residents had an Inn with bar and restaurant. At noon, the local customers all sit at one table, and visit and have a good time while they lunch. We were taken into the more formal dining room, with wooden chairs and tables decorated in Bavarian designs. The menu choices were limited, but there was well prepared solid food. Our meals included a small salad, pork roast or pork chops, green beans, and a choice of potato salad(hot) or dumplings. I chose the dumplings, and received not one, but two, dense grapefruit-sized flour and potato concoctions. Needless to say, it was enough to satisfy any appetite. The price was about $6.00.

The Christmas StoreBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

This is a winter wonderland in all seasons. Huge Christmas trees with every immaginable ornament are located throughout the store. Some rooms feature a single color, or a single theme. The only problem is that it is on several levels, and when you are looking at all the beautiful items, it is easy to lose your footing when the floor is uneven or it is necessary to go down some steps. If you love Christmas, you will love this store.
