Broadway Musicals in NYC

I saw this musical for the first time in late July 2004. The entire original cast was still in the show, but we had understudies for Elphaba, the Wizard, and Nessarose, plus a 6-week replacement for Boq. This didn't reduce my enjoyment of the show any however.

Eden Espinosa was the Elphaba understudy, and she was FANTASTIC. She gave the best performance of Defying Gravity that I've ever seen or heard. Kristin Chenoweth was an awesome Galinda and gave a very hilarious version of Popular. The rest of the cast was very good, with Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero and Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible being standouts.

This musical is one of the best on Broadway right now. It has a solid and very funny script with a GREAT plot twist, colourful costumes and scenery, and the songs are catchy, well-written, and upbeat. If you've read the book of the same name, this is COMPLETELY different - and in many ways even better. A MUST-SEE!

This was actually my first Broadway show - and the one I've seen the most times. I've only seen once actually in New York City however, and that was when I was three, with almost the entire original cast in.

This show is great for young kids. It has all the same characters and songs as the movie, plus several new songs added just for the Broadway production. The script has many fun jokes in it, and all the characters really show their personalities from the movie.

The absolute best part is the staging of Be Our Guest. The choreography is amazing and the costumes are all sparkles and glitter. Fireworks and streamers are going off, and it literally brings the show to a halt for the standing ovation that follows. That scene alone is worth going for.

This is a really fun and entertaining show that retains all the charm of the movie and is a great way to introduce kids to the Broadway Theatre.

This was the best experience that I have ever had at the theatre!! The show was AWESOME and it was my first time going to the stage door afterwards to meet the stars!The show itself was fantastic. All the performances (original cast!) were absolutely perfect. Maria Friedman was AMAZING. She was out there giving a spell-binding performance weeks after being told she had breast cancer, which made it all the more impressive. Micheal Ball as the villain proved to have excellent comedic timing and that he has a talent for handling rats.The most notable thing about this musical was surprisingly the sets. Instead of traditional sets, projected images were used to show the room, forest, street, etc. that the current scene was taking place in. This was very effective and made you feel like you were there in a way that traditional theatre cannot.Of course, the best thing about the evening was going to the stage door after the show ended. All the stars came out and signed autographs and posed for photographs. I got my picture with Maria Friedman and the chance to tell her how much I admired her for being out there in spite of her health issues. I also got to meet Micheal Ball, whom I am a big fan of, and got a picture of him as well. That whole experience was the best part of my whole trip to NYC!
