I can’t say I was distraught when my mother upgraded our hotel, offering to cover the extra expense. The accommodation in the $580 package not exuding the most comfortable aura, the four-star Villa Montparnasse, with rave Web reviews, seemed like a Godsend for only $200 more per person. I whistled a sweet tune on arrival upon noticing that the lowest going rate was 260 Euro per night, per room. Not only that, but a sumptuous breakfast buffet was included in our package, a usual extra 20 Euro per person a day. When I looked around at my fellow hotelmates in the quaint breakfast room, I could only think, “Suckers!”But if I had the money, I would certainly choose the Villa Montparnasse over a fou...Read More

By the time we arrived at our hotel, I was ready to rip through the city I had daydreamed about for years. My sister, on the other hand, looked longingly at the soft bed a mere few feet away. But hunger overruled the need for sleep, our growling stomachs shoving us out of our homely boutique hotel.Heeding the words of the concierge and my trusty Let’s Go, we scuffled over the wide sidewalks of the residential 14th arrondissement towards Chez Papa. We entered under the prominent sign only to be bombarded by culture shock: when one of the rushed servers spoke to us in French, all phrasebook preparation vanished, eliciting wide eyes and blank stares. This must be a common occurrence, as he sw...Read More

Around the world, Sunday is viewed as the day of rest, unwinding from the week before and preparing for the week ahead. A day to stroll the streets among friends, popping in and out of boutiques before settling in for a sumptuous three-course meal… oh, wait, this is Paris, where NOTHING is open on the holy day.Calmed by our lulling cruise on the Seine River, we had a plan: hop on the Métro to the 3rd arrondissement, arrive at 404, and indulge in exotic North African dishes and desserts. Well, it was open, and a serene setting emanated through the front door, but it might as well have been shuttered—they were booked solid. Cursing the patrons who would be enjoying my couscous, we pus...Read More

As my parents and sister resigned to a 2-hour wait, in the brisk wind and dawdling drizzle, for the Musée d’Orsay, I had more pressing things to attend to: a mountain of cheese, two glasses of white, and one glass of champagne. It was the day before my flight, and I refused to leave Paris without enjoying at least a few glasses of the highest-quality French wine. Why not, then, a wine bar? Of course, seeing how I choose one named the oh-so-refined Willi’s, I briefly wondered how French it could really be… French, smench, this English-owned wine bar produced the finest glasses of crisp whites and smoothest cheeses I’ve had the opportunity to, respectively, gulp and inhale in my short lifetim...Read More
