My husband and I spent a weekend on Mackinac Island during late October 2005. Mackinac Island is located just off of the northern tip of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

If you have never been to the island, it has no cars! You take a passenger ferry from either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Transportation on the island is either by foot, bike, or horse.

We stayed at the Bay View at Mackinac (www.MackinacBayView.com), a bed-and-breakfast on the water's edge. It has around 20 rooms and it is decorated in a Victorian manner, as is much of the island. The room was very clean and well-appointed; a really comfy bed, and beautiful furnishings and fabrics. We stayed in a suite that had a private balcony overlooking the yacht harbor.

Breakfast was a treat as it was not "continental" like the others but a seated, full, hot meal! They also served fresh-baked cookies in the afternoon and a yummy dessert in the evenings.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Oh, and they have a special Bay View Blend coffee that is fantastic.

If you have never experienced Mackinac Island, especially in the evening after the daily tourists have gone home, you'll not believe how peaceful it is. Maybe all that you will hear is the clip-clop of passing horse-drawn carraiges.

Also, the island is small so you can see much of it over a weekend stay. There are lots of shops as well as historical sites to visit.

Overall, a great deal for the price.
