Quote: Luxury hotels with fine restaurants and big casinos line the ever-lengthening streets of Black Hawk, a small mining town above Denver that is booming again. Everytime I visit I see new construction and new casinos going up. It's about an hour's drive into the mountains west of Denver.

Gambling is the big thing in this old Colorado mining town. You can stay for a night at one of the new hotels or at a historic bed and breakfast. There are lots of good restaurants and also fast food at bargain prices.

Gregory Inn

Hotel

The decor is very cheerful in this newly remodeled old home. What I like is that breakfast is included with the room price, but you can have it anytime from 8-11 a.m. in the nearby Red Dolly Casino. I would like to go back with friends and rent the whole inn, which sleeps 14, for $530 a night.

Beautifully decorated in bright colors, our room was quiet, relaxing oasis. Elevators to hotel rooms are accessible only to hotel guests so halls are quiet. We had a large spa in the bathroom to add to our relaxing evening.

The hotel is owned by the Isle of Capri chain.

We enjoyed a first class steak and seafood dinner complete with wine, appetizers, Cajun-style soup, and the house green salad with their unique Burgundy wine poppyseed dressing. Their house dressing is so outstanding that they sell bottles of it in their gift shop.

White Buffalo Grill

Restaurant

We had a great lunch here, which included a delicious seafood appetizer, a bountiful house salad, and a lobster, crab. and shrimp fettucini entree. Fresh herbed Italian bread with raspberry butter is served with the salads. Whether you win or lose, this is a great place to dine. Lots of open glass gives you great views of the mountains. The Lodge also has a fine buffet restaurant at very reasonable prices. Specific levels of slot play on your casino card can earn you a free buffet.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Attraction | "Golden Gate State Park"

Quote:
It seems you are miles up in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Yet it's not far from the big city of Denver and it's just eight miles north of Black Hawk.

We love to take a picnic to the park and spend a day just hiking and enjoying the mountains. We sometimes go to Black Hawk either before or after visiting this beautiful state park. We have enjoyed overnight camping in the park also.

The park is open all year. To get there: Go west of Denver on I-70 and exit onto Highway 119, then go 16 miles north. Follow the signs and go 1/2 miles east on a gravel road.

Gaming and entertainment takes center stage. This little town now has nearly two dozen casinos, and many of them offer live entertainment. Some of the newest and largest are the Isle of Capri, The Lodge, Riviera (owned by the Las Vegas Riviera), Mountain High, and Mardi Gras. Located on six acres, the Mountain High Hotel and Casino (formerly the Hyatt) features large gaming areas, several restaurants, a health club, and a 350-room hotel. In addition to gaming and shopping opportunities, this entertainment complex offers abundant dining experiences with its "Kitchens of the World." The restaurants wil serve Chinese, French, Italian and Mexican cuisine along with seafood. "Grandma's Kitchen"...Read More
