Theatre in London!

Overview

Quote:
The theatre world is alive and kicking in London. Check out http://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk to find out what is showing where. You could keep busy for days, hopping from play to play. The Donmar Warehouse and Lyric Theatre productions especially impressed me. While I was in line at Donmar, I talked to a woman whose friend told her to go to London and see "anything at the Donmar." I would like to give that advice to you as well.Quick Tips: Many shows sell out--if you can't make reservations in advance, show up at the theatre before the box office opens (usually 10am) on the day of performance. Many sold-out shows sell a few day tickets. Be prepared for a line to the more popular produc...Read More

Phantom of the OperaHer Majesty's TheatrePrice: 17.50-47.50Evenings: Monday through Saturday 7:30pmMatinees: Tuesday and Saturday at 2:30pmPhantom of the Opera has been running in London for 20 years, and no wonder. I don't usually like musicals, but this was fantastic. The singing and acting were both excellent, of course, but it was the set and costumes that most impressed me. Between the vibrant colors, the fire, the fog, and the moving scenery, it was quite a spectacle. This show is at Her Majesty's Theatre (a theatre that changes its name from "Her" to "His" depending on who is on the throne).Tickets range in price from €17.50-€47.50. I paid €1...Read More

The Cut by Mark RavenhillDonmar WarehousePrices: €15.00-€37.00 Evening shows: Tuesday-Saturday 7:30pmMatinees: Thursday-Saturday 2:30pmThe bad news: this new play by Ravenhill (the author of _Shopping and F**king_) starring Ian McKellan, is sold out through the end of its run (April 1). The good news: they sell 10 tickets each day for that night's performance for €15.00 each. Get there early, they go fast. I was at the theatre by 10:00am and there was already a line. The tickets go on sale at 10:30am, so get there by 9:30am if you want the best chance of scoring a seat. (Luckily for me, there were some other seats that opened up at €22.00 pounds, which I gladly paid)....Read More

The ProducersTheatre Royal Drury LanePrices: €20.00-€52.50Evening shows: Monday-Saturday 7:30pmMatinees: Wednesday and Saturday 2:30pmAgain, I'm not a big fan of musicals, but I had fun at this one. It's by Mel Brooks, so there's a lot of humor. The actors did wonderfully, of course. If you like _Guys and Dolls_ you'll probably like this. If you kind of like _Guys and Dolls_ you'll probably still like this, because it's a lot funnier. _Springtime for Hitler_ is an especially hilarious number. While I would have rather seen this play on Broadway, with Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, I still recommend this production.I bought a ticket on the day o...Read More

Embers, by Christopher HamptonDuke of York's TheatrePrices: €10.00-€42.50Evening shows: Monday-Saturday 7:30pmMatinees: Wednesday and Saturday 2:30pmIf you're looking for action, this isn't the place to find it. It's a talky play. They talk, and talk, and talk. That said, it's an old story, told with a twist: friend has affair with friend's wife, friends are, interestingly, still friends. A good story. Jeremy Irons stars, and he has the vast majority of the lines. He does a fantastic job maintaining the audience's attention, despite the lack of action. This is one case where it would have been worth the extra money for better seats. I paid €10.00...Read More

The Night of the Iguana by Tennessee WilliamsLyric TheatrePrices: 17.50-45 poundsEvening shows: Monday-Saturday 7:45pmMatinees: Thursday and Saturday 3pmThis was one of the best productions I have had the pleasure of seeing while in London. The set was phenomenal and fun, complete with real wind and rain effects. Woody Harrelson and Clare Higgins were fantastic, spontaneous, and natural. The other actors were good, but weak in comparison to these two.If you wait until an hour prior to the evening show or the morning before a matinee to buy your ticket, students can get the best seats available for 15 pounds. I ended up with a sixth-row center seat, and it was perfect fo...Read More

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward AlbeeApollo TheatrePrices: £10 to £45 Evening shows: Monday-Saturday 7:30pmMatinees: Thursday and Saturday 2pmI paid £10 for a restricted view seat. DO NOT DO THIS. Luckily, I've seen Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? before, so I know what a wonderful play it is. Kathleen Turner stars in this version, and she does a great job. Unfortunately, my restricted view seat put me in a position where I couldn't even see part of the stage—sometimes, all I saw were feet. The rest of the time, I saw the tops of the actors' heads. It was also hard to hear. Don't be tempted by the cheap price. For a play like this, you need good seats. You need to hea...Read More
