A February 2006 trip to Los Cabos by uwtuba

A 5 day, 4 night trip to Travel Channel's top rated beach resort in Los Cabos, could not have delivered any better results! We were absolutely blown away!

The best reason to go to Los Cabos is for the weather. It's a place to lay out in the sun, enjoy splashing around in the pool, have a few drinks, eat well, and maybe visit a spa. Casa del Mar is the best place in Los Cabos to do these things, and more!

Quick Tips:

If you're into the nightlife, Cabo San Lucas is a hot place to be. During the day, on the other hand, it's a tourist trap of the highest order. It starts as you leave the airport and almost never lets up. Best piece of advice we got was to book our transport, and activities, in advance and not give the timeshare hawks a chance to sink in their claws. Always keep in the front of your mind in Los Cabos, that anyone offering you anything is really looking for an openning to try and sell you a timeshare!

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis are wickedly expensive, but they're almost the only transportation available, especially if you stay in the corridor and want to go in to Cabo San Lucas for the nightlife. Many hotels have shuttles that run at specified times to certain locations, but that is fairly limited. I wouldn't recommend renting a car.

Living room of suite
We booked a deluxe room, but were surprised on arrival with a complimentary upgrade to a suite. The whole experience was one, "better than our wildest dreams", surprise after another. Marble floors, a kitchenette, dining and living room, a balcony, a Jacuzzi tub, a walk-in closet, everything about the accommodations just blew us away! It was incredibly luxurious and incredibly romantic all at the same time.

Every time we thought we'd seen the best the resort had to offer, we were wrong—something even better dropped into our laps.

We basically went to Los Cabos for a lot of relaxation and sun time, and we got exactly that. When they say "No bad days" in Los Cabos, they mean it! With six pools, two swim-up bars, and acres of lounge chair space, Casa del Mar was designed for relaxation in the sun—you're never more than a few steps away from a staff member waiting for you to request a beach towel, or some food/drink.

The restaurants at the resort were also phenomenal. El Tapanco is open for breakfast and dinner. The Pool Bar and Beach Club are open for lunch, and you can dine right on the beach at Mezquite grill 6 nights a week (if you get reservations, that is... )

There's a reason that this was #4 on Travel Channel's top ten Mexican Beach Resorts, and the top rated one in Los Cabos! They really go the extra mile to make your stay the experience of a lifetime.

Best Things About the Resort:
Immaculately kept and romantic, relaxing, and modern all at once. The staff is totally dedicated to making sure that you have the best time of your life.

Resort Experience:
Absolutely the most amazing vacation we've ever taken, it's a "must do again" destination. We did this one as travellers, not as timesharers. We were given a complimentary upgrade to a suite--and not just any suite, but the one that is commonly regarded as the best one available at the resort. Food--amazing. Atmosphere--romantic and relaxing. Service--impeccable. Spa--wonderful. Amenities--first-rate. This is THE place to stay in Los Cabos.

Terrace seating at El Tapanco
Casa del Mar's main restaurant presents an amazing array of dishes concocted by head chef Jennifer O'Toole, and presented in traditional Mexican style. The candlelit environment is extremely romantic, whether inside or on the terrace.

Every item on the menu we tried was amazing. The dinner items were perfectly spiced. The available breakfast items ranged from traditional Mexican fare, to things more accustomed to the American palate.

Imagine, perfectly grilled steaks, chicken, or seafood, delivered right to your table on the sand of the beach by the Sea of Cortes. Candles on your table, and a chiminea nearby for added romantic warmth.

The selections available on the menu are outstanding, and the options at the salad and desert bars are equally breathtaking. Simply one of the most special and romantic meals my wife and I have ever shared.

The Caborey dinner cruiser
The Caborey Dinner Cruise sets sail from Marina de Cabo San Lucas, near sunset, and cruises past El Arco and onto the Pacific side of the peninsula as the sun begins to set. The dinner begins after the ship turns to return to the Sea of Cortes side. The Chateaubriand and sea bass were wonderful, and the dessert was scrumptious.

The floor show as dinner concluded was very entertaining; including a singing MC, a spicy tangoing couple, and a trio of rhythmic bolo wielding Argentinean drummers who called themselves, the "New Gauchos". A tad on the expensive side, but worth doing at least once.

Water spraying through from the Pacific Side
One simply cannot go to Cabo San Lucas for the first time and NOT get on a boat to see El Arco de Cabo San Lucas up close.

When you do, I offer these tips to make your experience the best it can be:

Book your tour through your hotel concierge and do not fall prey to the timeshare sharks masquerading as tour-boat drivers. Use one of the upscale companies like Buccaneer Queen, Princessa, or Caborey and you'll enjoy yourself a lot more.

The arch is spectacular, especially at sunset. It's a tossup whether it is better at high or low tide--high tide has water crashing through the arch, while low tide reveals some of the beach under and around the arch.

The water is visibly different on the Pacific side than what you see on the Sea of Cortes side--another interesting feature that you can only see and experience for yourself when you decide to go.

Suenos del Mar SpaBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Stairway to the Spa
We spent one glorious afternoon at Suenos del Mar spa at Casa del Mar. Amongst the unique treatments offered by Suenos del Mar is the Chocolate Mint Experience—the entire body is exfoliated with a paste made from coarsely ground cacao beans and mint oils, followed by a full body massage, and capped off with a cup of traditional Mexican drinking chocolate. My wife enjoyed a facial, and some tips on Sun defense that helped her to enjoy her vacation to Los Cabos without too much sunburn. Definitely a must-do for anyone staying at Casa del Mar!!!
