Ruthin is a beautiful little city, and Ruthin Castle was the last place we stayed during our trip. It was known as the "Red Fort," and originated before 1277. It was originally part of the Crown Estate, until Charles I sold it in 1632. Largely rebuilt in 1827, it sits beside the River Clwyd among acres of landscaped gardens, parkland, and woods that can all be explored on your own. It even has its own resident ghost, Lady Grey, who murdered her husbands mistress and was beheaded for her shameful deed. Not worthy of being buried on the church grounds, she was laid to rest outside the castle wall. Her grave can still be seen today, with some investigating!
I highly recommend the Medieval Banquet, available at Ruthin. It is held in the original banquet hall, complete with maids to entertain you as you dine. Costumes are available to rent, or you can purchase your own and take them with you, which we did. It was less expensive, and we can always use them on Halloween! The food was served in traditional medieval style with large trays passed around the table. We were given only a knife to eat with, which seemed outrageous considering we had baked potatoes, salad, fruit, lamb, and chicken. Finger bowls were provided, however, to clean our fingers between courses. We were, after all, in medieval Wales, so we didn't worry about the mess! Be careful of the mead though. It tastes delicious and overindulgence will make for a late start on the next days travels!
The rooms were large and furnished in historically correct pieces, which added to the romance of staying in a castle. They left tea and biscuits in our room each day, and the staff was very accommodating. Our flight had to leave before breakfast, and they prepared two containers of snacks to take with us. When we were running late, they actually showed up at our door frantic that we had forgotten them!
I would highly recommend staying at Ruthin for a its historical value and the luxury it offers its guests. Exploring the grounds of the castle is definitely a treat and you should have your flashlight handy for the dungeons, if you're feeling brave...
