The best part about Cedar Key was the serenity. Almost NO cell phones work here, which was a big plus. Driving out 3 miles from the Florida mainland, starts the unwinding process as you take in the beautiful scenery of the Gulf of Mexico. The sunsets here are remarkable and every evening is a new and different canvas of sights. The sounds of engines are rarely heard. And the people of Cedar Key make every effort to make you feel welcome in this small, historic, coastal town. We enjoyed canoeing into the gulf to reach one of the other islands in search of sand dollars. While on the water, we saw quite a few black dolphins which frequent these waters daily. If you aren't into paddling yourself, there are several tours offered daily to sight-see, or look for sand dollars. The island also boasts a small runway, and twice we watched landings from about 40 feet away. We reconnected with each other, and left the stress of the ringing and the noise pollution at home. We found a great Inn (FarawayInn.com) that rented guest houses or rooms. It was so quaint and the owners put a personal touch into every aspect of this gem.
Quick Tips:
Cedar Key, while 3 miles off the mainland, is about an hour from any major grocery or shopping chains. (Chiefland is the closest city) There is no commercial fast food on the island, but there are several dining establishments, and a small grocery store. If staying for more than a few days, you may want to pack a cooler (be sure your hotel provides a refrigerator)because there really aren't any bargain places to eat out.
Shopping for gifts and knick-knacks is easy and available here. There are many family owned shops and galleries for every taste.
Oh yes, and bring some water shoes. The coastal beaches are scattered with shells and they can do some damage if your feet are not protected.Best Way To Get Around:
Once you arrive you'll notice there are NO STOPLIGHTS on the whole island and just a few stop signs. The best way to view this quiet town is by foot or bicycle. If that's not for you then just go downtown and rent a golf-cart. It was only about for the day, and well worth it. We took it to go shopping for the day and to visit the landing strip.
