The lines are long and the sun is hot, but Nathan’s is a must-stop in Coney Island. Nathan’s has been serving hot dogs since 1916 and annually holds the World’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest. (The record is 53 1/2 dogs in 12 minutes.) My favorite is chili cheese with sauerkraut. The cheese fries are amazing and the portions are huge. I can never finish a meal there. Other favorites are onion rings, hot-dog nuggets, hamburgers and french fries. Everything is excellent. There isn’t much seating, but it’s only a short walk to the beach. I always end up talking to people while waiting in line. Must be the excitement of truly getting one of the tasti...Read More

Ah, 4th of July in the Big Apple. Big crowds, excitement, anticipation, fireworks? Nope, I’m talking about Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island.Every year since 1916, 20 people have been lining up on July 4th at noon to eat as many hot dogs and buns as they can in 12 minutes. Regurgitation is an automatic dismissal, and a pitcher of water and condiments, such as ketchup, mustard, and sauerkraut, are provided. Usually the condiments are ignored, but a current trend is to dunk the buns in the water to make them easier to digest.Currently, Takeru Kobayashi of Japan holds the record of 53 1/2 hot dogs in 12 minutes. He is a legend in the “International Federation ...Read More

Attraction | "Free Fireworks: Summers, Coney Island"

Quote:
Coney Island has free fireworks every Friday in the summer, starting at 9:30pm in front of Astroland Park, between West 10th and 12th Streets. Come early, come late, it doesn’t matter. For some reason, not many people know about this summer event. I like to get a hot dog or some cheese fries and a cherry slushy (or maybe a beer, depending). And I sit on a bench on the long pier on the Boardwalk. Bringing a blanket and lying on the beach is nice, too. This is one of my favorite summer activities and makes me absolutely love New York. Take a date, a friend, or your kids, or go alone. This is a relaxing thing to do on a Friday night.Take the Q, F, or D trains to Coney Island. ...Read More
