My friends and I wanted a winter escape, but not to Florida. And we definitely wanted to go somewhere "off-season" to avoid the crowds commonly found in warmer locations during the winter months. Hilton Head sounded like the right place, and it was. The trip was perfect!

Best Things Nearby:
The beach, Coligny Plaza, Bi-Lo. Piggly Wiggly. This resort is in a great location even if you don't have a car! Everything is within a couple of blocks. Savannah is within an hour and a great place to visit!

Best Things About the Resort:
Our unit was incredible. Three bedrooms, all with private baths. Two of the bathrooms had whirlpool bathtubs. All had TV's and alarm clock radios. The kitchen was fully equipped including a washer and dryer. A breakfast bar separated the kitchen from the dining area. Lots of cabinet space, and closet space, as well. There was a large living room area with sleep sofa. Very comfortable unit. There were four of us, but plenty of room for more. There are several pools, but no indoor pool. You can pay $20 per unit per week to join Player's Club (a couple of blocks away) to use their facilities which includes an indoor pool. One of the pools on-site was heated and there is a large heated hot tub.

Resort Experience:
Although none of us are golfers, we really enjoyed Hilton Head. Just the natural beauty alone makes it worth seeing, but restaurants, shopping, and many varied activities make it a great place to vacation. Because it was late January, swimming at the beach was out of the question, but we still spend quite a bit of time there, walking and just enjoying the serenity of it. The weather was terrific for the season-- mid 60's to 70 degrees.

Aunt Chilada's

Restaurant

Sign
Aunt Chilladas is located right next to Waterside. Some would say that the cuisine is Mexican, but this place has the best burgers on Hilton Head! And the French fries are excellent, as well.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. If you're looking to just have a cocktail there is a separate bar area.

Julep's Restaurant

Restaurant

Wonderful! We went for the early bird specials, which is a great deal. Salad or soup, entree, and dessert for $14.95! And the food was delicious. Friends who go to Hilton Head every year told us that it was the best restaurant on the island so we decided to trust them. That was a good move as it was the best meal any of us had that week.

Crazy Crab

Restaurant

Probably one of the most popular and recommended restaurants on the island-- there are two locations. We went to the Harbourtown location.
Very friendly and casual atmosphere. I had scallops and they were very good. I'm allergic to most seafood so I was limited, but found the menu very appetizing. Everyone in my party said their meals were great, and it isn't the easiest crowd to please!

Skillets

Restaurant

Skillets is basically a breakfast restaurant. It is large and nicely decorated--does have a lunch and dinner menu, but is known for breakfast.
The menu is unique and varied. The service was less than spectacular and the food very average in taste.

Truffles

Restaurant

Every "local" that we asked for a restaurant recommendation, said-- Truffles.
Based on that, how can you not?
Truffles appears, at first glance, to be a classy restaurant-- may scare you off. Don't let that happen. It is a great place to eat and has a very regular menu, nice selections, and the food is very good.

New York City Pizza

Restaurant

Although the pizzas were good in the end, the staff was unwilling to accommadate. All we wanted was one regular pizza and one white pizza-- no tomato sauce, but cheese and a little garlic. They refused to make the white pizza. There are about 250 restaurants on Hilton Head, at least 35 of them have pizza. I would choose a different place next time.

Trip to Savannah

Activity

riverboats
If you can, be sure to take the time to go to Savannah. It's only a 45 or 60-minute drive or you can take a boat from Harbourtown or book a tour. It is worth it! We went on a 90-minute historic tour which gives you an opportunity to see more of the city and get a real feel for it. Savannah is lovely with the most tree-lined squares I've ever seen in one place. And River Street is fun, with the riverboats and great shops. Don't miss River Street Sweets if you like pralines!
