A February 2006 trip to Rhode Island by cjwelty

Quote: This was a getaway weekend with my husband and friends. It was a good place to do some catching with our friends whom we do not see often. Newport was a wonderful place to do just that, it has a nice diversity to it.

Overview

Cliff walk, mansions, wine tasting, shopping, restaurants, relaxing, and kayaking. All of the ones I mentioned here are a great way to spend a weekend in Newport. All of this is right outside your door of this resort. Quick Tips: Discount coupons can be purchased right at the resort inside where you check-in, they have all the local event listings also. Anything you need just ask, they know all and are very accommodating. They just pick up the phone and find out for you. Best Way To Get Around: There is all kinds of transportation, from car rentals, to taxi, bus, trolley car. Best Things Nearby:This resort is right in the middle of Newport overlooking the bay. The restaurants and shopping are very nearby all within walking distance. No need for a car.Best Things About the Resort:The resort itself was very helpful in attending to our every need. Whatever you asked for they were more than willing to accommodate you. They even suggested where to go for dinner/who had the best deals for dinner and also gave you a list of restaurants and their specials at the time of your stay. They have a indoor pool area with a workout center which is very nice and a sauna. There is no hot tub at this resort. There is a play area with swings that is fenced in fo...Read More

This restaurant is in the Marriott Newport. It is a very nice place to have dinner; the menu has seafood, steak, chicken, appetizers, salad. The decor is lovely and the restaurant overlooks the harbor (if your lucky to get a window table). If not, the atmosphere is great anyway. The service is just wonderful, very polite waiters are right there at the right moment that you need something. Our meal was very good; we had salmon and the other couple had steak, which looked very good also. If I had the opportunity to go back I would definitely say yes.

This restaurant is like a pub and has a bar, tables and booths. They serve lots of different dishes; from lobster quesadillas, conch fritters, shrimp dishes, lobster salad, Mediterranean pasta, grilled swordfish, NY strip steak, to all different types of desserts. It is a great place for lunch and dinner. Not expensive, as some of the restaurants can be in Newport. Great food, and a truly great lunch experience.

Mansion Experience

Story/Tip

Quote:
One experience we just loved was the cliff walk in Newport and the Breakers Mansion, which we took a tour. It lasted about 1½ hours and was just wonderful. The mansion itself has the original furnishings in it that the Vanderbilt family lived with back in the 1800s. Of all the mansions in Newport, with 70 rooms this one is supposed to the grandest of the Newport summer cottages. It sits on 13 acres, overlooking a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. Our guide was excellent, never felt we were rushed and answered all questions from the group we were in.
