Cairns is a pleasant town. It's relatively small, with 120,000 inhabitants, so it's quiet and laid-back. Although there's not so much as a real tourist attraction in the city itself, there are many people coming here because of the natural attractions nearby.First, it's right at the sea. You can make several short or long boat trips to the Great Barrier Reef from the harbour. And there is plenty of rain forest nearby due to its tropical settings. There's also a reasonable nightlife here and many places around to stay and eat.Quick Tips: Best Way To Get Around: As Cairns is a small town, use your feet to get around. It is a transport hub from this region, so there are p...Read More

Green Island

Attraction

This is yet another island from the Great Barrier Reef. The island is very tropical, and of course the water is again full of colourful fish. I was also lucky enough to spot a small, 1m or 3-foot, reef shark. It swam away quite fast when it saw me coming. Maybe I didn't shave that day. You can take a boat trip to this reef island from Cairns' harbour. It will cost about A$65 for a 1-day trip, including lunch and snorkelling gear. The company that we used was called Big Cat Cruises. The boat was alright and the fish barbecue lunch was excellent. At the end of the trip they were feeding the reef fish. At this time we saw different sharks, big discus fish, etc.

This small rain-forest town is situated 30km northwest of Cairns, right in the northern Queensland rain forest. You can feel that the equator is not so far away anymore (16°S) in this tropical region. The village itself is rather touristy. There are tourist shops selling everything from crafts to cuddly toys. There is a bird park, a herb farm, and many other places like this. You can take short or longer jungle walks starting from the village. These walks, especially the longer ones, are quieter. To get here from Cairns, you can take the Kuranda scenic railway or the skyrail. You can also take a combined ticket, so you have both views. Both ways are spectacular. The scenic train will bring yo...Read More
