We had 3 days exploring the world's largest sand island. It was a beautiful place with gorgeous lakes, rain forest, unpaved roads, and sand dunes.

Fraser Island, listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, is the largest sand island in the world. Most of the island is filled with rain forest, creeks, lakes, and lots of sand. Famous sights are the coloured sand cliffs called "The Cathedrals"; the Maheno shipwreck on the beach; Lake McKenzie, with its perfect sand dune; the place to take a dip in a freshwater lake; the Champagne Pools for a shark free dip in saltwater; and the view from Indian Head.

Quick Tips:

A good idea is to buy as much as possible on the mainland, as the few shops on the island charge huge prices for anything.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to come here is to buy a tour package. We came here on a 3-day package deal from a company called Fraser Escape. We bought it at the Brisbane Station tourist office. It was the cheapest one around for A, including a 3-day sail in the Whitsunday Islands.

The reason for the low price is that it was a self-drive, where you got to drive your own 4WD van together with nine people without a guide. You get to stay in tents on the island and you cook your own food that you bring over from the mainland.
Our tour group
The gateway town to Fraser Island boasts many hostels. Mostly your tour will give you 1 or 2 free nights in Hervey Bay, but you can book extra nights cheaply (below A$20). This is also the place where you will meet your fellow travellers to Fraser Island. There are a few decent beaches around this small town.

Dingo on the white sand
The dingoes (canis lupus dingo) on Fraser Island are the only ones in Australia not crossbred with dogs. They are closely related to both dogs and wolves. The population was halved by the authorities after one of these "wild dogs" attacked and killed a child here.

Seeing a dingo walking on the white Fraser sand dunes is an amazing sight you will not easily forget. We were lucky to spot them a few times, which is not so easy anymore these days.
