Weekend in San Francisco

A February 2001 trip to San Francisco by Milja

San Francisco is a fabulous destination. It is a perfect place to spend a weekend, or a day, or a full week. With so much to do you'll never run out of options, even when you return again, and again.

With so much to do in the city, it is hard to pick the cream of the crop. I really enjoyed Alcatraz, taking the streetcars up and down the hills and into Fisherman's Wharf.

Quick Tips:

If you only have a day, the Gray Line bus tour is fantastic. You get a good feel for the city and its top attractions.

Best Way To Get Around:

Streetcar is a must down to Fisherman's Wharf. Do everything you can do to not rent a car!

Attraction

The Japanese Tea Garden was very cool, even if you don't normally like gardens. The fee is $3, and well worth it. The park is awesome for rollerblading.

This tour is on an authentic, San Francisco cable car. There is a hop on/off option at Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and Union Square. Drive through scenic neighborhoods such as Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Nob Hill, Downtown Union Square, Chinatown, Financial District, and along the Waterfront.

Attraction | "Muir Woods"

This is a must see for anyone heading to SF. It is only a few miles north of San Francisco, and well worth the short drive. Muir Woods is an isolated canyon that is home to ancient coast redwood trees. The park is best known for its incredible solitude—you feel minuscule compared to these trees! It features good displays and programs, and numerous hiking trails. A coworker once told me "You'll find God in Muir Woods." It is true that the places makes you aware of how small we are in the world. Truly awesome.

Story/Tip

Touring "The Rock" was a favorite stop. The only way to take an Alcatraz tour is by getting on a Blue and Gold Fleet boat from San Francisco. Alcatraz tours are very popular, and they fill up fast. I missed it my first trip (in the summer), but bought tickets early the second and third time I visited. Before you go, be sure to watch the movies "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "The Rock"—they bring the place to life.
