We visited in 2003 which marked the 200th anniversary of the Louisianna Purchase and the beginning of the Lewis and Clark Exploration, both of which were encouraged/developed by Thomas Jefferson. There was a special program focusing on these events.

Best Way To Get Around:

We took a car since Monticello is a plantation out in the countryside, 2 miles from Charlottesville. Check the Monticello website for bus tours from town.

Attraction

Monticello
You really start to understand how brilliant this man was, and what it would be like to visit him at his home before and after he became president. Hear about his financial difficulties and see some of his inventions. He was an avid reader, and many books are still there.

Located in the Virginia Piedmont, Monticello is just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, about 2 hours from Washington, DC.
