My Biggest Little City

A travel journal to Duluth by Jerril

Quote: When I want to get away for a weekend Duluth is one of my favorite places to go. Just far enough away to get out and unwind, but not too far that it's much of a journey to get there.

My Biggest Little City

Overview

Quote:
The shores of Superior are my favorite place to go hiking in the summer and, skiing at Spirit Mountain is the best activity for me in the winter. This is a journal about my more recent wintery adventures in Duluth.

Best Way To Get Around:

A friend and I decided to take advantage of the midweek ski special they have at Spirit Mountain. This was one of the hotels that offered two free lift tickets for staying. We stayed on a Tuesday and Wednsday night, so it wasn't very busy at all. Located right off of I-35, the highway that brought us to Duluth from St. Paul, made it very easy to find and very convenient to get us where we were going. If you want a room at a Comfort Inn with a view, though, I would reccomend the one on the shore of Lake Superior. The room had everything we needed and a few of the extras: cable t.v., a radio, a fridge, an indoor heated pool and spa for those evenings in doors, and the lake is only 4 miles away w...Read More

Everytime I've driven through Duluth I've had dinner at this place. It (used to be) a one of a kind (they've expanded to other parts of Minnesota) bar and grill setting where you could bring a bunch of friends and have a lively time. Now that they're located near the Twin Cities I don't have to drive nearly as far when I want my Grandma's fix, but the new restaurants aren't as good as the original. When I first visited this restaurant I noticed that there was plenty to look at with all the antiques and novelties hanging off the walls, there was a mechanical bull, and a very old fortune telling machine. Now, there is even more antiques and things decorating the wall but the mechanical b...Read More

A lot of ski areas in the middle of a Minnesota winter have hard, flattened, icy snow, but such is not the case at Spirit Mountain. There are constantly snow making machines so there is always plenty of fluffy sleek snow. The size of the hills aren't quite as big as I've seen them, but they weren't too small, either. I think the name Spirit Mountain is a tad misleading, especially because there are no mountains in Minnesota. The slopes are big enough, however, to deliver a magnificent view of Duluth and Lake Superior. We rented equipment for four hours for $15, a tad pricy for four hours. The boots and skis were standard, nothing special but just what we needed. I think that after ...Read More

Glensheen Mansion

At first I wasn't very interested in taking a tour around this historical mansion, but my parents convinced me by making up some story about a murder mystery that happened there. I was 10 years old. 10 year olds are often like that. Now that I appreciate the historical contexts and grandeur of the house, I wouldn't need a murder mystery to interest me in a tour. (Although, this would be the perfect environment for one.) Glensheen resembles an English country estate built here in the early seventeenth century. The focal point of the estate is the manor house which is located near the center of the property. A formal garden adds color to the grounds. Coming ...Read More
