Local's View of Salt Lake City

A January 2006 trip to Salt Lake City by LaughingLunatic

There is more to it than the religious venues.

So many people seem to misinterpret what there is to do in Salt Lake, and there are so many different stories that go around about the different laws that it is hilarious. There are a lot of people who live in the area who are not Mormon than you would think. The nightlife is happening; the only difference is that the bars stop serving at 1am (in California, it is 2am), but typically, clubs stay open until 2-2:30am even after they stop serving alcohol.

If you are an outdoorsy person, there are tons of things to do around Salt Lake City, from hiking to rock climbing. Little Cottonwood and Big Cottonwood Canyons are beautiful in the summer and are a great place to get outside.

Quick Tips:

*Local beer is 3.2%, so everything on tap is 3.2% - if you want higher-point beer, order something that comes in a bottle that is from out of the country: Red Stripe, Guinness, etc.

*There are a lot of great restaurants in the downtown area.

This is a great club for a mix of people. It is a little classier than some of the clubs. In the summertime, it is awesome because they have a nice patio where you can sit outside and drink. The best nights are Thursday nights, which are incredibly packed, so expect to wait in line if you arrive after 10pm. Sundays, it is a nice place to chill with a few friends and catch up. They have a dance floor upstairs and a cigar lounge on the other side. Downstairs there is a main bar area and several pool tables.

This is the best bar for anyone visiting any day of the week. It is especially popular during conventions. The bar is right in the downtown area and is really big. It is generally considered a sports bar. The basement is the main sports bar area with a lot of TV's, pool tables, air hockey, arcade games, etc. The main floor is mostly a dining area with a small dance floor. Upstairs there is a huge two-level dance floor that is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. Friday nights feature Top 40 dancing and on Saturday nights there are live bands.

They are open during the day for lunch and open early for dinner. The food is actually really good (for a bar, I recommend the nachos). I smoke, and since this is a private club, you can smoke in it. They will ask for a membership at the door. Just ask for a temporary membership, which is around $5 and is good for 2 weeks.
