Renting a motorcycle on Maui offers memorable rides, but novice riders beware: beauty can have its price.

Hale Kamaole

Hotel

This far to get to good snorkeling

Hale Kamaole

I would recommend Hale Kamaole not only because the facilities were great, but the staff is so friendly and helpful. This condo resort in South Kihei has spacious units with full kitchens and a dining area and a lanai on a green courtyard with an outdoor pool and BBQ facilities. We got a one-bedroom unit, which could have slept five. We also had a washer and dryer in the unit.

The condos sit right across from Kamaole Beach III, which has okay snorkeling, with easy access (not to mention that it's a short walk).

Hawaiian Riders

Activity

On the North-Western side of Maui

Hawaiian Riders

One of our favorite activities is riding motorcycles, and renting and riding on each of the Hawaiian Islands was part of our plan--a plan that we will have to continue later. We rented in Kihei and rode to the Western side of the island, past Kaanapali and Lahaina. Once you reach the northern-most part of the island, the state road ends, and you begin on an 8-mile road of the sharpest hairpins, narrowest single-laned and cliff-hugging roads you'll ever see. Most rental companies warn these roads are for locals only. The unspoiled beauty and views on this side has made this the greatest ride of both our lives. If you plan to drive or ride this road, BEWARE. The road is literally an arm's length wide, has drops of a thousand feet or more with no guard rails and turns on a dime. Not to mention, it is a two way road, so coming down around a sharp turn at an incredibly steep decline that may require negotiating, with little or no room for error.

There are many places on each of the islands to rent a motorcycle. We rented from Hawaiian Riders because it was so close to our condo in Kihei. Unfortunately, they went out of business after our trip (hmmm, coincidence?)

Don't want to ride all day? You can rent for four hours, half day, full day and even weekly.

***BIG TIP*** Take the insurance liability offered. For $29, a $3,500 liability is better than having to buy a whole motorcycle that you'll never see again. Believe me, it's worth it.

Some other rentals on the island can be found here; they each rent mopeds, jeeps, and exotic cars as well.

Old Lahaina Luau

Old Lahaina Luau

This luau was recommended to me by numerous past visitors. Reserve EARLY. We got lucky on the waiting list a month and a half prior to the trip. The food was incredible and the show was fantastic. The dancers performed a history of Hawaii through the ancient hula. This luau also has open bar and the lava flows are delicious, trust me.

The grounds the luau is held on are beautiful, and as the sun set over the beach, the colors looked surreal.
