During a braai (South African for BBQ) last Friday, me and a friend got invited by others to spend the weekend in the seaside town Kleinmond, about one hour and a half drive from Cape Town. Obviously we said yes, as we really needed a break from the city. Kleinmond seems a bit dead, but don't be mistaken. The seaside town boasts at least two highlights that kept us busy and entertained for the entire weekend: an amazing stretch of pristine, unspoiled, white beach and a wonderful nature reserve (Kogelberg Nature Reserve). Quick Tips: Driving directions:One can take the N2 highway to Kleinmond (take the turn-off at Botrivier; the R320)....Read More

Snoek Braai

Story/Tip

Snoek Braai in Kleinmond Photo, Western Cape, South Africa
Quote:
When being in South Africa, try if you can join a genuine South African 'Braai'. A ...what? A Braai, the South African version of a BBQ. A South African braai is better than any form of cooking-meat-or-fish-on-a-fire-and-grid I experienced anywhere in the world. Braaiing in South Africa is almost considered as an art, and therefore South Africans tend to take braaiing very seriously. This means, if you are invited for a braai: Leave the grid alone, don't touch the meat unless you are asked to do so and let the South Africans do the job. Don't interrupt the braai process with ' Maybe you should...'. It will, simply, nopt work. Just sit back, relax and enjoy. Any...Read More

Since we were all quite stiff as a result of the drive from Cape Town, and since we struggled with the results of too much Cape wine the previous night, we decided to walk the demons on Kleinmond Beach. Stunning. Ab-so-lu-te-ly stunning. Kleinmond Beach is without a doubt one of my favourite beaches in the Western Cape province. This broad strip of pristine white sand is clean, quiet, practically unspoiled and tucked away in between green, fynbos covered mountains. The scenery is without a doubt breathtaking. That I am not the only one was proven in 2005, when Kleinmond Beach received Blue Flag Status. The Blue Flag Campaign measures beaches worldwide against very strict enviro...Read More

On Sunday morning, we decided that time had come to hike the braai and wine of the previous night away. In the morning, we headed out for Kogelberg Nature Reserve, a 10-minute drive from our cottage. Kogelberg Nature Reserve is a gorgeous place, practically undiscovered by hikers and holidaymakers. The reserve is comprised of an area of 18,000 hectares, tucked in between fynbos-covered mountains. There are a couple of hiking paths, including the Palmiet track. This 17km track runs along the Palmiet River and is one of the best walking routes through the reserve, amongst others because of the many swimming spots along the way. The Palmiet River, in summer t...Read More

Two of the major activities on the Palmiet River are canoeing and kayaking--in winter, that is. It is during April and September when the Western Cape province experiences most of its rainfall, which results in a paradise for canoe and kayak fanatics. During that particular period of year, the Palmiet River is awesome for those who seek action and adrenaline on and in the water: great rapids, strong currents, and stunning scenery. What more do you want? This doesn’t mean that the river isn’t worth it during summer. On the contrary, during the Cape’s dry summers, the Palmiet River is the perfect place for a swim! The water is utmost refreshing, a true ...Read More
