Finland in the Winter

A November 2000 trip to Helsinki by Osaubi

Long weekend in Helsinki.

I happened to be there towards the end of the City of Cultre 2000, that they were celebrating last year. We had taken a city tour in the morning, and since we had the evening free, I asked her what would be a good thing for us to do. She said there was a reindeer event that evening that looked exciting.

Quick Tips:

The two suggestions I would recommend are:

1. The Finns don't have a word for sorry, so when they bump into on the street, they just walk on with out an apology.

2. You can't leave Finland without trying a sauna. The sauna is usually taken without clothes on, but they make an exception for people from other countries.

Best Way To Get Around:

If you are staying in the main area you can get around by walking everywhere. Driving is not recommended unless you are going to outlining cities.

The atmosphere is wonderful, and unique. The seafood was execellent, the portions are large, and the price is incredible. I would recommend reservations only on the weekends.

The Cathedral of Helsinki is the largest church in the city. It sits on the Senate Square in the middle of the city center.

Finland is almost all Lutheran. There is one other church in Helsinki that I saw, and it was a very small Catholic church by the embassies.
