Buffalo is far from being the most glamorous city, or the most sophisticated, or the most popular, or the most anything. But Buffalo has hidden talents that only require a little searching.

Jim's Steakout

Restaurant

Jim's Steakout has a wide selection of subs for takeout or eating in. Their chicken finger sub is my favorite. There are plenty of other items to choose from, including wings and steak sandwiches. The restaurant's eating area is not decorative, and most people seem to get there food to-go, but the food is great and the whole family can find something that they like. Check out jimssteakout.com for locations.

Dave & Buster's

Restaurant

Dave & Buster's is a large restaurant with an outside entrance in the Eastern Hills Mall, next to Orvis. The restaurant is loud and busy, but an enjoyable experience. There is a bar area, a game area, and the dining area. There are video screens everywhere with sports playing and a large train-station-style board that updates with dozens of sports scores. The main dining area is open and spacious, and there is a meeting room for large groups.

Dave & Buster's would not be my choice for a romantic date, but it would be good for a large group of friends (or maybe a date with someone you are worried you might run out of thing to say because the atmosphere gives many topics for discussion). Friday night is not a good time to come because it is very noisy, but any other time it is fun.

The food at Dave & Buster's is the main reason for coming. They have a large selection of typical American fair. (Overall, this restaurant is not too unlike TGI Friday's.) The fish-and-chips is very good: the batter is light and crispy and their version of tartar sauce is very unique. The Philly cheesesteak was a treat: the steak was seasoned perfectly, the meat shaved very thin, and the roll was huge. A trip to Dave & Buster's is a good choice for anyone looking for a large menu and a entertaining distraction after a day of shopping on Transit Road. It's worth a second trip.

The Martin House is an excellent example of Frank Lloyd Wright's design genius. (It is one of the reasons I myself went into architecture.) It may seem surprising at first that a simple town like Buffalo would be home to a Frank Lloyd Wright work, but Buffalo has more unique architecture then you might think. The Martin House is under some renovations as of 1/06, but it is still open for tours. Check out www.darwinmartinhouse.org for tour information and updates on the renovation work.

Also of interest to anyone who appreciates Frank Lloyd Wright is Graycliff. Graycliff (nicknamed "Wright on the Lake") was the summer home of the Martin family and is located at 6472 Old Lake Shore Road in Derby, NY (about 30 from the city). Graycliff is also under renovation. Check out graycliff.bfn.org for more information.
