Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurants In NYC

A January 2006 trip to Brooklyn by Ami

Where to eat healthy in New York City

  • 6 reviews

Not only do vegan/vegetarian restaurants in New York have great service and food, but their prices are bearable.

Quick Tips:

Many of these places will prepare the food according to your liking, so just ask. You may alter foods that are fried to be steamed, have no salt added, ask for extra sauce, like I always do, etc.

Best Way To Get Around:

Most of the restaurants do not have their own parking lot, and the areas in which they are located are high-traffic areas that make it a challenge to find parking. However, this is not always the case.

Veggie CastleBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This a Caribbean-style vegan/vegetarian place. The buffet bar has steamed broccoli, noodles, and 2 types of brown rice, collard greens, sweet-potato pudding, BBQ tofu, veggie fish, and many other kinds of tofu. There is a wide variety of fruit and vegetable juices, baked goods, veggie burgers and soy and vegetable patties, too. There is even a health food store located in the back part of the restaurant. They even do catering. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

Service: The service is pretty quick. You have the option of dining in or take-out. Many seats available for those who choose to dine in. A parking lot is avaliable for customers.

Atmosphere: There is Jamaican music playing constantly in the background.

Restaurant | "The Greens"

This is a wonderful place to have lunch. The lunch prices are excellent and so is the service. Someone will be at your table as soon as you sit. It has a wonderful window seating available, so you can watch people as they go by. Soft unobtrusive music plays in the background.

The menu features Chinese, vegan, Kosher. All kinds of “mock-meat” combinations from duck, to beef, to chicken can be ordered. Everything is great! I especially like their large salad portions and the scallion pancake. Some of the food preparations can be changed if you ask.

The Greens is nestled in the Brooklyn Heights area of Brooklyn. It's on the corner of Henry Street. Take the 4/5 or the red line to Borough Hall, or the N/R to Court Street. Walk down to Montague Street. Walk two blocks Henry Street. It is located on the second floor, above a Chinese restaurant.

Vegetarian PalateBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Located on the busy streets of Flatbush Avenue, this is a haven to the vegans and vegetarians in the Park Slope area. Although its menu is similar to that of Vegetarian Paradise 2, there are no relations between the two.

Soft music and a warm smile greet you as you enter and are seated. The menu features a wide range of mock-meat items, including chicken, duck, beef, and even eel. All your taste buds will be on active duty as you dine in this place. The food does not have a lot of grease or oil and their sauces are excellent. As for the salad, there nothing else like it. When you taste their Crispy Soul Chicken, you won’t want to leave. With food like this, I don’t know why people eat meat.

They have a wonderful lunch special from noon until 4pm. Excellent! This place is no. 2, behind VP2 of course.

So how do you get to this paradise? Take the no. 2 to Bergen Street and walk towards Grand Army Plaza. It’s located between St. Marks Avenue and Prospect Place. You can’t miss it.

Ital FariBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Ital is the Jamaican word for vegan, as this is a strictly vegan Caribbean restaurant.

This place makes it on the list because of its wonderful breakfast and natural juice menu. They are open early, so you are able to get a bite before you go to work. For breakfast you may have half-inch-thick bread or a wrap with vegetables, beans, and a variety of mock meats. For lunch try one of their soups.

Their juice bar is also excellent, providing juices that help boost your immune system, treat the common cold, and give you the extra energy you need in the morning. They also serve vegetable, Soya, and soy fish patties. And for dessert you can try one of their many flavors of soy ice cream.
There is no seating area, as it is a small storefront, but the food compensates for that.

You can reach Ital Fari by taking the no. 4 or 3 trains to the Crown Heights, Utica Avenue stop. Walk about 2 blocks down toward Empire Boulevard. It’s between President and Union Streets.
