Willoughby, Ohio. As a child growing up here, it was simply home: the place where I felt more comfortable than anywhere else. By my teens, it had become boring. I wanted to leave this town—leave the state of Ohio. So I did. By marrying a serviceman, I created for myself the opportunity to see and live in other cities, other states…even other countries. My horizons expanded, big-time. Now, after moving at least 20 times, guess what? I have established residence once again in northeast Ohio, less than six miles from my old hometown. And you know what? I’m liking it.The trees that line both sides of Erie Street have blossomed into a beautiful embellishment of the town’s décor. Most ...Read More

Gavi's

If you need to impress someone with very discriminating taste, or if you’re just looking for the ultimate location in which to celebrate, Gavi’s is the place. Set back behind Willoughby’s main street, the sturdy building that was built in 1896 as a power plant now houses this sparkling gem of a restaurant. Named after a village in the wine-producing Piedmont region of northern Italy, Gavi’s cuisine blends old world authenticity with the comfort of modern times; it’s peasant style with a twist.Impeccably presented by top-notch servers on crisp linens, the food--priced towards the high end--is superb. Gavi’s menu features such delectable-sounding dishes that it is difficult to make a choice....Read More

This is one of the area’s favorite gathering places, and for good reason. Originally a rail-car depot, the huge brick exterior of this 100-year-old building with its high arched windows stands out in its location behind the stores on the east side of Erie Street. Brick is much in evidence inside, also. It has a large, curved bar, individual or group pub tables, or large booths to sit at in its wide-open spaces. And don’t be surprised when you see the model train winding its way around the tracks that are suspended from the ceiling overhead, softly punctuating your conversation periodically as it whispers by. By day this is a fine place to share lunch or dinner with one or a group of friend...Read More

Located on the corner of Erie and Second Streets, here is a fun, calypso-inspired restaurant/juice bar, featuring tropical cuisine with a Caribbean-Mexican touch. The atmosphere is sunny and cheerful, and everything is fresh, made on the premises. The juice bar looks like a tiki hut surrounded by inviting stools. Choose from such refreshments as the Sun Drop (carrot and orange), Pelican Kiss (apple, cranberry and ginger—my favorite by the way), or the fizzy Mango-Lime Spritzer. Feeling a little rough? How about The Morning After (tomato, carrot, celery, scallions, green pepper, garlic)? Also featured are frozen yogurt/soymilk shakes, such as Coconut Frenzy or the Tingle. If you wish somethin...Read More

This local chain is billed as a “morning meeting place” or an “unconventional art gallery.”Willoughby’s is in a gorgeous setting: lots of brick inside and out, nice big windows to let in the sunlight and offer an interesting view of one of this quaint town’s main corners, hardwood floors, and even a restored staircase in the front to add character. I have to admit that it looks better than it did in its previous existence as (believe it or not) a hardware store! It’s so inviting and comfortable that it’s hard to leave—I met an old schoolmate here for lunch one time, and we stayed and talked for 3 hours!Various coffee and espresso drinks are the primary offerings, as are chocolate dri...Read More

Corks Wine Bar

If you’re looking for a classy, yet casual place to take a date or you just want to hang out with friends and you love wine, Corks is a good choice for you. From the restored brick wall to the custom-built oak bar, it’s designed like an old classic wine bar with a continental flavor. This is probably not a place to take a ravenous appetite, but a number of tempting hors d’oeuvres are offered. French bread, plain or as a four-cheese pizza (delicious!), is one recommendation. Also available: imported and domestic cheeses, French pate, bruschetta, or (if you have a sweet tooth) cheesecake.

To quote the slogan used on their literature, “The Holden Arboretum connects people with nature for inspiration and enjoyment, fosters learning and promotes conservation." Established in 1931, it consists of 100 acres of trees, shrubs, and flowers, all of which have been meticulously cultivated into a virtual paradise. Even as a child, I loved hiking the trails at the arboretum, where my family had a membership. Everything always seemed so healthy and so neatly organized! The labels make it fun and easy to learn about all the trees, of which there is every kind imaginable. There are 160 varieties of crabapple trees alone, and the sight and scent when they bloom in the spring is not to be believed. Dit...Read More

If you have a talent that you would like to develop, or if you simply enjoy seeing the artistic talents of others, the Willoughby Fine Arts Association is another reason to like Willoughby. Located just around the bend from the downtown area, this three-level center houses all of the arts under one roof. Its busy schedule includes classes in the visual arts, dance, theater, and vocal and instrumental music, taught by quality instructors. If you are lucky, your visit might fall during the run of one of the great plays that are staged in the lovely auditorium. The ones I have seen have seemed closer to professional than amateur in caliber. "Man of LaMancha", "Arsenic and Old L...Read More

Target

Quote:
I know what you're saying: Everyone knows what a Target is like! I just thought I'd put in a plug for one of my favorite retailers in case you have a need for something "modern" while you're in Willoughby, and at the same time, "Target" the city's main collection of retail stores.

To get to it, simply continue west from downtown Willoughby on Route 20 (Erie Street, which becomes Euclid Avenue) for about two miles. Here, in addition to Target, you will find Lake West (the area's fine hospital), Lowe's Home Improvement Center, TJ Maxx, Giant Eagle Supermarket, RiteAid, Petsmart, and just about every kind of fast food known to man.

Scooters

Scooters Soda Fountain & Sweet Shoppe Photo, Willoughby, Ohio
Quote:
After lunch at one of Willoughby’s intriguing restaurants, be sure to save room for a special treat at Scooters. (Or maybe you want to skip the meal and just go for the treat!) Located on the main drag in historic downtown Willoughby, this is the kind of place you probably never expected to set foot in again. The minute you step into this old-fashioned soda fountain you realize how it got its name. Lining the very walls are a number of examples of the kind of scooter children used to ride down tree-lined sidewalks in days of yore. Other memorabilia are there, including shelves full of soda, milk shake and coke glasses, jars, vintage mixing equipment and of course, penny candy. The list of home-m...Read More
