Wait you have to also try the Swiss Raisin Nut Bread!!Quick Tips: Find a parking space in a lot and hit the town. There are many places to buy Beer Steins, glassware, porcelain, alpine jewelry, bavarian music, candies, cakes and Helen even has a tattoo parlor.Best Way To Get Around: Walking is the way to see Helen....Read More

The Inn is across from the Chattahoochhe River and the Octoberfast Hall, which I'm told makes it a great place to stay during the Octoberfest. (Hopefully I'll mak eit to Octoberfest one day!) The inn has Alpine styled lodging with king size bed or 2 doubles. The rooms were very spacious and very clean. The inn provides continental breakfast with excellent pastries.

The restaurant is a few miles from Helen but worth the trip. The food was excellent with German fare being the most available but there are several more traditional American offerings. The sausages were excellent and we ordered a sampler dish. All were great!! My favorite was beer flavored. The sauerkraut was divine! The restuarant fits around 80 people, so we found it a bit crowded the night we went. There is a German deli and gift store also located in the Inn, nothing overly fancy but still fun.

Let's see what they sell --- imported and domestic cheeses, Georgia wines, German meats & sausages, gourmet beef jerky (gourment beef jerky!!??), cookies, candies, chocolates, sauerkrauts, tea , coffee and etc. What did I buy? A little of everything!!

The staff was very knowledgable and they will locate and order, then ship to you something special you don't see here. I have recommended this store to a few friends when they travel to the area. Some of the items may be a bit pricey but the quality was excellent.

Unicoi State Park

Attraction | "Unicoi State Park -- Anna Ruby Falls"

Quote:
Unicoi is one of the oldest of Georgia's State Parks. It is tucked into the mountains and has one of the most beautiful lakes in the state. It has excellent cabins and lodges and a wide schedule of festivals. All these items make it a very popular mountain getaway. The day we visited the park it was almost empty; could have been the drizzle all day long. The spectacular Anna Ruby Falls lie in the middle of the Chattahoocee National Forest. They border the Unicoi State Park. There is a 4.5 mile hike that takes you to the falls from Unicoi State Park. We took the easy route --- There is a exit on SR 356 right outside Helen, that takes you to the falls. The falls are about .4 miles from the parking...Read More

Alpenrose Quilts & Gifts

Attraction | "Alpen Rose Quilts & Gifts"

Quote:
The store offers a large selection of handmade quilts at reasonable prices (remember hand-quilted means expensive)and all are fully hand-quilted. They have items that are traditional to modern/contemporary. They carry almost every accessory to match the quilt to complete the look you are looking for. They carry nursery bedding items also. I saw the store and figured I would go inside to find a gift for a baby shower. I certainly found the right place. They also have select gifts in the bavaria theme.

Heaven on earth --- is that enough of a description?? Walk into the shop and your nose is in heaven instantly. Soon your eyes will be overjoyed as they hear the candy being made. Next your eyes will be thrilled to see fudge being made right in front of you on the marble fudge tables. Finally your mouth will be in total heavenly joy!! I had fudge, a caramel apple and a turtle just as I walked and shopped in the store. I bought more for the roadtrip and even more for home.

Helen --- History

Story/Tip

Quote:
As you enter Helen, you’ll soon be introduced to the local Tyrolean flavor by the bavaria styled buildings and the smell from the many German bakeries. Helen started out in the mid 1910’s as a lumber town. The city was named after an official’s daughter. During the depression, Helen was hit hard and the town almost died. The city was foundering until 1969. Around this time, several residents tried to think of ways to save the town. One resident suggested redesigning the town to resemble a Bavarian Village, after towns he had seen which on vacation in Germany. The idea was agreed upon and the tiny town of less than 300 residents became the Alpine Helen we know today. The history lesson is provi...Read More
