A March 2004 trip
to Florence by Glamazon22
Quote: In the heart of Tuscany, Florence in late winter/early spring is still great city to visit and has by far the best pasta in all of Italy. Coming here on spring break 2004 was the best experience.
We took a train from Venice to Florence and unfortuately it took us forever to get around because an unexpected snow storm blew through so getting to Florence late and not knowing where we going we hailed a cab. The cab ride was close to 16 Euros and to make matters worse it was seriously only 6 blocks away from the train station. Unlike Venice, in which we had to take a boat to the heart of the island and at only 5 euros, walking 5-6 blocks for free would have been better!
Caveat: Scooters and Motorcycles have the right of way ALL the time. So be on the look out you can run over easily. It is Italian law and the norm for all two wheel vehicles to just have the run of the streets. You've been warned.
I found this hotel on a hostel website. It was the only hostel we stayed in where we had our own bathroom. Although the bathroom was small, the actual room was large and the staff was very friendly. There was an old man who spoke no English but who could speak Italian, Spanish, French, and German, so brushing up on our best American public high school French, we were able to communicate.
The only downside to this hostel/hotel was that it was located on the fourth floor, with no elevator. And to make matters worse, one of my travel companions brought a huge black suitcase, which had wheels fortunately, but they did not serve us very well going up and down steps.
At about $30 to 40 a night per person, I thought this was a deal being on a student budget. If I was going with my boyfriend, I probably wouldn't like it, but if you are desperate to go to Italy and are on a budget, this wouldn't be such a bad option.
