Overview

It's amazing, but there really is a lot to do on such a tiny island. If you're a diver, there is Casino point. If you're a sunbather, there are a handful of beaches to choose from (my favorite is Descanso because it's mostly deserted). If you like food and drink, there are several bars and restaurants. If you're a shopper, there are stores and a great marketplace. If you like to hike, you can hike. If you like to ride horses, you can do that, too. There is something for everyone on Catalina Island. Quick Tips: Dress warm because the wind can be chilly. Protect your skin from the salty air and sun. Best Way To Get Around: There are a few cars, but people mostly travel by g...Read More

Antonio's

Restaurant

Quote:
Antonio's sits delicately at the water's edge on Catalina Island. Located on the main drag, it is a well-known place amongst the locals and frequent visitors. In side, you're engulfed in a microcosm of old, decorated dollar bills. Nearly each person who’s visited the restaurant over the years has decorated bills and stapled them to the wall. I have a few in the myself - the first time I went scuba diving, spring break my second year of college, numerous sea explorer scout trips, etc. Some choose to commemorate the wedding, birthdays and anniversaries while other just write their names. It is a unique idea that you must see at least once. As for the food, Antonio's has the best pizza around. It...Read More

Luau Larry's

Attraction

Quote:
Luau Larry's is the hippest, loudest and most alchohol-infested joint in all of Avalon! Every night it's thumping with music and busting at the seams with sailors in a drunken stupor. It is a lot of fun. Some nights there is karaoke, others a live band and others a live stand-up comedian. If you are in for a good time, come to Luau Larry's!

Catalina Island is the Caribbean of the West Coast. Nearly every day the visibility extends past 60 feet into the depths below. Casino Point consists of a dive trail that leads hundreds of divers every week along a path of the California state fish, the Garibaldi, a wide array of other sea creatures and large, looming kelp forests. The trail is only about 40 feet at its deepest, so it is a popular spot for beginners and dive classes. If you want more advanced, less crowded diving, dive at the reef, just about 1000 feet from the Point, or at the Isthmus (aka Two Harbors, the other city on the Island). All in all, however, the diving at Catalina is superb.

Hiking in Avalon

Attraction

Quote:
Hiking in Catalina can be tricky if you don't know where you are going. Ask a local shop owner where they suggest you hike. I like to take the main road that you follow after disembarking a vessel (cruise ship or shore boat) and follow it all the way to the top. Snakes do lurk in the brush, so watch out for those. The sun is constant and can fry you quickly if you are not careful. If you are up for beautiful scenery and a great workout, hike Avalon!

Boater's Paradise

Attraction

Quote:
The majority of island visitors get to Catalina by boat (that is unless they fly in a small plane or helicopter). Chances are also that most visitors love boats! At no time is this more apparent than during Memorial Day. There are so many boats in Avalon Harbor tied up to the moorings that you could literally walk across the bows to get to shore. That is a lot of boats!

Kayak Avalon

Attraction

Quote:
The water is so clear that you can lose concentration when kayaking in Catalina. However, it is fairly easy to kayak when you ARE paying attention. It is recommended that you kayak between Casino Point and the Reef so that you don't get in the way of powerboat traffic, but being that far off the beaten path, so to speak can make it more difficult to have a smooth ride. The wake from passing boats gets increasingly larger as it swells toward you, so you MUST know how to quarter waves in order to stay out of the water.

The Casino is the grand, white, circular building that was once a casino. It has, however, been converted into a movie theater. The theatre does not show first run movies, but it does provide a diversion, if you need it.

Catalina is a great place to walk (interval training) or Parasail. The visibility is good, the area is safe and there are plenty of places to see. Parasailors can rent gear and have the experience filmed on tape by a local shop. Check the yellow pages for information.

The Spanish Market is located on Via Casino before you turn off for the Casino, itself. There are a number of fun and eccentric shops in the Spanish-style complex. Be sure to take advantage of local art. And if you get too tired to carry all of your purchases, rent a golf cart!

Story/Tip

Quote:
Here is an excerpt from how I once described Catalina Island to a friend: I did all of my scuba dive training at Casino point, which lies directly at the large, white, round building and houses the island's only movie theater. Walk down Via Casino - the main stretch of road that follows the outer edge of Avalon. The water is amazingly clear, to where I could stand on the deck of a sailboat looking downward and seethe anchor in the sea floor 60 feet below. If you go to the southern end of the island (to the left of the pier) and walk or rent a bicycle all along that edge of the island, it's beautiful, too. Catalina is very tranquil, especially this time of year. The streets are narrow, but rem...Read More
