Journal Usefulness

Crystal River, Florida, is the best place for beginner snorkelers. The manatees in the area are very friendly and are aware of our purpose, which is to PLAY!

The area that we did most of the Snorkeling was Crystal clear waters and about 15 manatees that were prepared to play. One of the Manatee actually wrapped his fins around my sister-in-laws arms and pulled her in for a hug. Another amazing thing I witnessed was a Mother manatee nursing it young. They do this under water for about six minutes then come up for air. Another highlight was how knowledgable our Birds Underwater tour guide was. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Quick Tips:

Being a beginner snorkeler, I had to rent a wet suit for . If you are experienced, definitely bring your own. Also be prepared for how cold it will be once you're out of the water. On my boat, they supplied coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to help with the chilly weather. Another thing to be aware of is the size of the animal; it may be large, but it really is a gentle giant.
