This is a terrific location for a hotel because you are in the center of the universe, so to speak. The energy on the streets spills right into the hotel’s reception area; check in was a breeze, and get your parking vouchers stamped so you can park without losing your shirt. Rooms are cozy and very small, a la European, though the furnishings and décor could stand a hauling over. Unfortunately, there will be no pictures to share, since one cannot hold a camera and crutches at the same time. Perhaps the next trip into the city will not be so dramatic. What was totally amazing is that I had asked the front desk about reception for wireless, and was told that not all rooms have direct access, a...Read More

I am deeply grateful to Priceline for making this midweek stay at the Barclay possible. How else could we rub elbows with world dignitaries meeting here for the UN Security Council? In spite of its birthday almost 80 years ago, the Barclay is a world class hotel, having undergone a face lift around age 75. Luck continued to be on our side at check-in, as we landed a king size room on the top floor. What more could happen? As we reached our room, there were two bodyguards and a chair in front of the room next to us, and to this day, we will never know who slept there. Secretly I was hoping to catch a glimpse of anyone, be it in the hallway, the huge reception area downstairs or at the Bar & Gr...Read More

As we arrived in front of the Best Western, I couldn’t help but notice the name of the restaurant practically glued to the hotel. Somehow, with our intense love of Vietnam, I knew we would have to end up here for something or other. Being in Manhattan always recharges us, except of course, I had to be careful about walking since it was icy on the sidewalks, and I was not looking for another leg injury. Chuck walked in from his working day, and declared that we simply had to go downstairs and sample the Vietnamese cuisine. He had already checked out the place, and was ready for the experience. The restaurant presents a subdued atmosphere, with low diffused lighting, and seating which allows f...Read More

As soon as we stepped inside, I realized we had been here before, but it had never registered. This is about as off-off Broadway as you can expect, but the quality of the material is excellent. I had been drawn to this play by a review in one my favorite NYC Guide, Time Out/NY . Normally, we would have taken a train to get there, but because I was on crutches, we were forced to take a cab on a night when the transit strike was threatening to hit the next morning. As you enter the theater, it takes the appearance of a bookstore with a cash register to the left. Ads and leaflets are everywhere for the taking, and so are classified ads. Some couches and ...Read More

Tuesday night is perfect for an off-Broadway production like this, as you can drive into Manhattan from Queens without too much concern about choking in traffic. It's also very delicious when you can get $65/seats for half price. Here I am going to give away one of my best secrets, all in the name of culture. Go to Broadway Box and have a blast looking through the offerings. Both my daughter and I happen to love Judy Gold, and we've seen her on HBO and Comedy Central a few times. Seeing her live was a bonus, because we had front row seats. Imagine the luck! The show is not geared for Jewish mothers only; I think all ...Read More

I categorized this as a museum/gallery, even though it is neither. However, it is closer to the education one would receive if one were to go to either one. The nature of my business brings me many interesting people from overseas, and this time, I was entertaining a Sufi from Bangalore for a few days. She's very heavily invested into meditation and is paying her karmic debt in the fervent hope of not having to return to earth for another life. She also gave me "her bible" to read, which in essence are the teachings of Buddha. Thus, I thought it might be interesting for both of us to visit the Mahayana Temple on Canal Street, since I was heading there for my weekly acupuncture session. O...Read More
