A September 2005 trip
to Moldova by 3mttours
Quote: In Moldovan standards, it is a metropolitan city, housing some 25% of the whole population, though to someone coming from a big city, Chişinău may rather look like a provincial city. It can be visited on a half-day walking tour.
Hotel | "Hotel Codru"
Situated in the residential area of Chişinău, with many embassies and other hotels, Hotel Codru is right across Ştefan the Great Park.
Its look is great. Rooms have a good look, but for its four stars, Hotel Codru needs some more training of its staff. Rooms come in two categories: standard rooms, which have not been refurbished, and Euro rooms, which have been refurbished. The price differs, of course. Otherwise, the rooms have the same facilities: shower/bath, minibar (caution: the fridge is unplugged; if you would like to cool your drinks, just plug it in), and colour TV. The bar downstairs is all right, only it closes early, not being a place for having a drink later at night. The souvenir shop also does this, and it does not open on weekends either.

Attraction | "Tour of Chişinău"
The statue of the ruler Ştefan the Great, now in front of the park, has toured the city. Initially, the statue was located on the Central Square, where they later had the revolution and their declaration of independence from the Soviets. This was, however, a far too central location, so it was moved here by the Soviets, and in its original location is a Lenin statue. But this location was far too popular; everyone was walking by and parades were held here, so it had to move once again, this time some 18 meters back in the park. After the declaration of independence, it was moved back here, to the entrance in the park, while Lenin's statue was demolished.
The Triumph Arch was built in 1840, when they had their victory against the Turks, aided by the Russians. From the Turkish cannons they made a bell, which, until a few year's ago, hung in the Arch, no one knowing where it had been brought.
