2005 Hawaiian Island Trip

A December 2005 trip to Kauai by AnneGraham

Quote: This was our first trip to the Hawaiian Islands! Mizumi invited roommates Trena Jones and Jess Collins. We spent 1 night in Waikiki and Oahu, 1 week in southern Kauai, and 1 night in Maui (sunset to sunrise) hula dancing, surfing, taking ukulele lessons, and lei making. We had perfect weather.

Attraction | "ATV Mud Bog Trip"

Trena and Jess got their own ATV's, Mizumi was the driver of two-seater Mud Bog, and I was the passenger $125. She tried to hit every mud puddle she could and ran off the road in the mud; three guys had to help her get it out. Trena waved her to go ahead down a dark sugar cane tunnel, and she drove like a bat out of hell, with me screaming, and when we got to the end, a team leader came and said to go back with the group.

Fern Grotto

There is a native village there that we walked around and came back with mosquito spray the next day. We went in native canoes down the river to Fern Grotto. The guide was same age and perfect for Mizumi, Trena, Jess, and me. We did not like all the hundreds of people on a riverboat that preceded us to the grotto. We waited for them to leave and got more mosquito bites. There were Islanders playing songs and a waterfall.

Mountain Tubing Adventure

Attraction | "Tubing through a plantation canal"

This was a 3-hour trip down the old sugar cane plantation irrigation canals in rubber tubes with a team leader, water shoes and gloves, and night lights on our heads for tunnels. We had a lunch at a waterfall and jumped in. It was a great family adventure!

We had a 15%-off coupon for the AHI Activities & Attractions Association of Hawaii, where it costs $145 for each person to take an ATV out for 4-hour off-roading through the mud and hills of Kauai, having lunch and visiting a waterfall. We had a great time! They made a CD of us for $20!

I wanted to go in for our free Kauai mug, but you have to spend $20 to get it. It is totally a tourist trap in there, costing four times the price of what you could find at other local stores! Be careful! The shirts and dresses are four times what they should be!

Go to OKI restaurant for macadamia nut pancakes and Hawaiian food; Mizumi liked the teriyaki chicken and rice. ABC shopping is better than Hilo Hattie's, and Java Juice is the girls' favorite daily stop! And the local K-Mart is a treat!
