Neveria La Violeta

Restaurant | "Freshly Original Ice Cream"

La Violeta ice cream Photo, Guadalajara, Mexico
Quote:
This little ice cream shop has been open since 1921, a long time for any business, specially since the location is not fancy, not convenient, no near any touristy plaza or park, etc. When my local friends told me they would bring me to the best ice cream I imagined another location, but this is in the middle of an industrial block.Nevertheless, the ice cream is hand made, you can see the workers spinning the vats over buckets filled with ice and salt, a strenuous job, specially on a hot day, which in Guadalajara are plenty and sometimes extreme (up to 100F on Summer). The artisan work is reinforced by only using local fruit: vanilla, mamey, nuez, cajeta (caramel or "burnt" milk), fresa (...Read More

Hermanas Coraje

Restaurant | "Angry Sisters Make Great Food"

Las Hermanas Coraje Photo, Zapopan, Mexico
Quote:
The name is "Hermanas Coraje Carnes Asadas" which means Angry Sisters Grill. The story as I was told is like this: in the market there were a couple of sisters handling a small grill stand, their food was always very good but they kept on yelling at each other, yelling at the customers, all day long, every day, but people didn't get put away by their mood, as the food was too good to let the yelling bother them, and when refering to them people would say, the stand of the "corajudas" (angry girls) and the name got stuck. The restaurant serves middle class and workers, is not fancy at all, you sit at metal chairs proper for an outdoor rodeo. There is no menu in English, only a big bann...Read More

The Gastronomic Tour of Guadalajara

Overview

Quote:
Guadalajara is know for its tequila and mariachis, but life is not only about getting drunk and serenading your lady; first you have to put some food in your tummy in order to be able to party all night long (wich would be difficult in Guadalajara as people and bussiness go to bed early). This city has a lot of food to offer newcomers and frequent visitors; of course, you know all about Tequila, but what about Tortas Ahogadas, Carne en su Jugo, Tepache, Birria or Tejuino? All of them are specialties of the area, and you should have some--they are very tasty.Torta ahogada- a specialty of the region you won't be able to find anywhere else. They stuff a birote (like a hot dog-sized...Read More

A nice hotel very conveniently located near the Expo Guadalajara site. If you are an old visitor to Guadalajara, you may remember it as the Hyatt. The gym is named the Olympus Club and is nicely equipped with modern machines. Go and enjoy a nice swim at the heated outdoor pool and then get inside to spend some time at the Jacuzzi or the the steam bath, both in good condition, so much that a lot of locals come to enjoy the Olympus Club on a daily basis. The restaurant has a very good variety and the prices are right, but you can also eat at the Italian specialty one, where they make an impressive fettuccine. In front of the hotel there is a large mall, Plaza del Sol,...Read More

This used to be a high class hotel, unfortunately the little hill is not what it used to be.The place is not bad, the service is good but the golden age of the hotel is gone. There are some renovations going on like changing the locks in the rooms to accommodate cards instead of the old fashioned brass key. When you go around the hill in the way to the reception you pass a lot of vacant lots and vacant houses -very expensive ones- the green areas are unkempt, the rooms may be mushy but are clean and spacious. We had the breakfast buffet, it wasn't something to write home about but it was a tasty and filling meal. You get the normal fare: eggs any style, sausages, pancakes, fresh fruit,...Read More

Camino Real Guadalajara

Hotel | "Camino Real Guadalajara Expo"

Camino Real Guadalajara Photo, Guadalajara, Mexico
Quote:
This is one of the newest hotels in town (aperture Nov. 2006) and keeps the style of Camino Real, the pink bold colors and the interesting architectural details. My main complaint of this hotel is the lack of a swimming pool as this one is catered towards business customers on a quick and busy stay at the city. The hotel is just across the avenue from Guadalajara Expo, so is very convenient if you come for an exhibition, fair, or convention. There is wireless Internet in the whole hotel, but you need to pay $17 for a 24 hours period of usage. Signal is strong at the lobby, in the room I had to connect via the Ethernet cable but it's just a minor issue.I didn't eat at the hotel no...Read More

This is a great place to eat. There are a lot of typical restaurants in this city, but La Tequila has some of the best cooks working with them. In our group of four (12 on the second visit), nobody could complain about the food. The preparation is superb, service is a little bit on the slow side, and a few of the dishes lacked a bit of presentation. You see, here we have a saying: "De la vista nace el amor"--"Love is born from the sight," so the "looks" of the food is important for us.All of that is forgotten and forgiven once you have the first bite, as all of our main dishes were superb. We had plato de arrachera (beef steak to make tacos), steak baked on salt, and shrimp steak with baco...Read More

Real food and plenty of it with a homemade touch, here you will have food with the taste only a Mexican grandma can make, the ladies that are in the kitchen knows their job and enjoy it.The place is so popular that at lunch time you have to stand in line for 10-15 min. to get a table, and the reason of the popularity is not only good reasonable prices but the quality of the food and the size of the portions. The first time I went there I had a lot of appetite, I couldn´t finish my second dish and my partner decided on cancelling the second as soon as he saw the first. This last time the weather was...Read More

This place only serves one main dish: carne en su jugo. And they do it fast, fast, fast. They hold the Guinness World Record for fastest service (13.5 secs), and I vouch for it. In my 6 visits so far they never took more than a minute to bring the carne en su jugo (beef stew Guadalajara-style). The other items we ordered took a little bit longer but never more than 4 or 5 minutes, with drinks or extra tortillas for example. They always put a dish of tostadas and a plate of frijoles con maiz (refried beans and corn) that go very nicely with your beef. For drinks you can have the refreshing horchata (soft drink made with natural blended rice, melon seeds, and cinnamon) that is ver...Read More

Squina

Restaurant | "La Squina"

Great shrimp burgers!! Yes, shrimp and hamburgers blended in a great combination tastes great. They also have the normal beef burgers if you don't like seafood. You have a toppings bar where you can fix your burger the way you like, with mango habanero chili sauce or guacamole, cucumbers, and the normal lettuce and tomato with mayonnaise if you are on the conservative side. This guys make a special jalapeños with strawberries or jalapeños with mango that is very spicy and sweet at the same time. If you like hot food, don´t miss it.The restaurant is labeled seafood in some guides, but you have more options than that, like chicken or beef, but all are good. They presents themselv...Read More

The main reason for this restaurant to exist is Carne en su Jugo (meat in its own juice). There is another famous restaurant that specializes in carne en su jugo, but they are into speed. Here in kamilos they take their time and are more refined, but also fast, not immediately fast, but fast enough for you not to die of hunger.Beside carne en su jugo (which they write Karne, just because they wanted to be different), they also have other meat dishes: T bone, Pynezyo, Fylete, and Arrazhera (half-pound rib steak). I ordered the Peinecillo (little comb), which is a beef chop that is very tasty. It took like 20 minutes for it to arrive at the table, but it was very well done and ...Read More

You dare eat at food carts in the street? Then go to these. They are very popular (there are three carts, including one devoted to dessert). This guy's specialties are vampiros (beef or pastor tostadas with melted cheese), asada (beef), pastor (pork kebab-style), gringas (flour tortilla, melted cheese, and your meat of choise). Here fast food is fast. In a McDonald's you will have to wait 1 minute for your order to be ready; here your taco is made in 10 seconds, in front of you. There are several kinds of salsa, from the extremely mild one everyone can eat to the one so hot only real machos will dare. They are ordered from left to right for you to choose your own torment. Plus, y...Read More

Tacos, tacos, and more tacos!!!!Here is a very well-priced, good dining place. The service is efficient and normally with a smile. You will find all sorts of tacos: al pastor (like a kebab), asada (beef served with a spoonfull of beans), lengua (tongue), nana, macisa, etc. Plus, there are quesadillas, queso fundido (melted Chihuahua cheese), beans stew, and chicharron de queso (fried crunchy cheese). The place is beer-friendly, and you will enjoy a good ambience. The place has unique decorations: the owner (Charlie) is a BIG fan of las Chivas del Guadalajara (the Goats of Guadalajara) and has all kinds of soccer paraphernalia concerning his favourite team, from shirts...Read More

This tacos are so popular that you should plan your visit time; at lunch hour, it's so crowded, you have to wait in line outside for 15-20 minutes to get a table. And is not because the waiters are slow; on the contrary, they serve quickly--as fast as the guy making the tacos can put the meat on your tortilla! The menu includes carnitas (roasted pork meat--different cuts, including cheek and other delicacies), tacos al pastor, quesadillas, tacos de lengua (beef tongue), and asada (grilled beef). In other words, it's very Mexican fast food. You will love the pork meat, as it's very tender and rich in flavour. If you are not the adventurous kind, then ask for "maciza," which would be tenderlo...Read More

This is an extremely famous seafood restaurant in Guadalajara, there is a lot of competition, as Puerto Vallarta and other small fishing communities are 4 hours' drive, so fresh seafood is something very normal here. But if you ask any cabbie for a good restaurant, they will invariably mention El Carnal and El Negro in their lists.I had a light lunch consisting of tacos de camaron empanizado (breaded shrimp taco with melted Chihuahua cheese), tacos de filete empanizado (breaded fish fillet taco), and a tostada de marlin (fried flat tortilla with marlin on top) they were really excellent and filling, those plus a soda added to $58 pesos and my only desire was to have more room in my stom...Read More

This is one of the jewels of Guadalajara, a lot of people had told me before, but until this visit, I was too busy and far to try it. Gladly this time we took the excuse of our boss's birthday to celebrate at El Negro. The place is very anonymous, they don't rely on advertising, the facade is plain white, no big neon displays or colorful decorations, despite that, the place was packed and a constant flow of customers was flowing all the time. The secret: fresh seafood and excellent cooks. The waiters are good, but not exceptional, but they try very hard to pamper everybody. During our meal we were asked more than a couple of times if we have ordered such or such dishes, I do prefer that ins...Read More

Africa

Attraction

Africa Photo, Guadalajara, Mexico
Quote:
It is a great place with ample rooms, so you don´t feel suffocated, and the DJ plays good music that lets you dance and maintain a conversation with your friends.

The place is decorated with some African ideas, like an elephant at the entrance of the club and some trees and plants inside the dance room, nothing very exotic, but it is a change.

The night we were there, there was a great mariachi band playing. They are so good, they play not only Mexican folk songs to welcome the visitors but also adapted pop music. They blend both in a very smooth and pleasant way to please all.
