If Nicol Edwards isn’t on Edinburgh’s most haunted pub list, it should be. When this pub was built, or should I say, "unearthed", there were rumors of the diggers finding human remains in one of the catacombs. Of course any bar owner will tell you that their pub is the most haunted. However, that same catacomb is now what is called the "music box", where many people shake their booties to groovy tunes, and sometimes claim to see a ghost or two. Or perhaps, once you’ve had your second jug of mixed spirits for the night, those eerie paintings on the wall seem to look real.

Whatever the case Nicol Edwards has character. Dow Niddry street, just off High street in the old town, you’ll find Nicol tucked away and under the buildings. The bar has an older, medieval feel to it. Walk in, and already you are faced with a direction choice in what later might feel like a maze. To your immediate right are stairs leading down, to your left is the first bar, and directly in front leads you into the theater. Yup, theater. This small theater with wooden benches also has a DVD selection of over 50 to choose from. The night and weekend schedules are pre-set with 2-3 movies per night. During the day you and mates can grab a pint and choose your own selection to watch.
The walls are brick and while each room is slightly different and themed, most of the décor is black wrought iron and wood. The medieval dining hall, just off the first bar has large wooden tables and high backed wooden benches. Deeper into the bar, and to your left you’ll find the second of the three bars. A large mirror stretches out behind the bar and a few high tables are set up.
Down the hall you’ll find the music box, and at the end of the hall you’ll find the third bar. This room is host to live music, stand-up comedy, karaoke, and pub quizzes. Seating is hard to find during live music nights, so get there early.
Whatever your pleasure Nicol Edwards is a great pub to add to your list of places to visit. You’ll always find cheap drink specials, something going on, and a great group of friendly people.
Some tips, bring a jumper, it does get drafty, and women… beware the men’s toilet labeled "Laddies", when you are pissed it looks a LOT like ladies.
Open daily at 10am for food and drink until at least 1am (weekend nights til 3am, and during festival month till 5am.)
