San Diego to Big Sur (California)

An October 2005 trip to San Diego by sophiasd

This is an annual road trip that my husband and I take in October to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year we drove it in a 1976 VW Westfalia van.

Best Things Nearby:
Take the short hike to the historic lime kilns. Also, enjoy a sunset glass of wine at the adjacent beach.

Best Things About the Resort:
Creekside location.

Resort Experience:
This campground is often described as "big sur funky", meaning the spaces are small and close together. However, the stunning location along a creek and mature redwoods makes it stunning. Definately get a creekside spot, as the ocean side spots are on a paved parking lot and under the freeway. Free hot showers, and friendly camp ground staff. This is for car camping only; the place is too small to accommodate RVs.

Trail to Ventana Inn

Best Things About the Resort:
Privacy of sites

Resort Experience:
This beautiful campground is set among magnificent Redwoods. Due to the way the sites are contoured up a canyon, they are all very private. The bathrooms can be a bit of a walk depending where your site is located, but they are always clean, with lots of hot water. The staff is also very friendly. Pets are welcome for an extra charge.

Definitely get reservations, as this place is small and the tables do not turn over too quickly. We've dined here twice for dinner and twice for breakfast. We are always delighted with the menu and the wine list. Be sure to save room for dessert. All levels of staff are friendly and helpful.
