Marion Reservoir

Overview

Quote:
We love to spend peaceful afternoons at this large, quiet reservoir. Many country roads lead to secluded alcoves around the lake where one can take in the wonders of nature.

Quick Tips:

Come prepared for relaxation or bring a boat and cruise the uncrowded acres of water.

Best Way To Get Around:

Need to drive to the lake itself. Walking shoes are essential for trekking around the lake.

We haven't found any concession facilities around the lake itself but if you'd like to buy a meal, nearby Hillsboro is ready to meet your needs. We've eaten at the McDonalds there, Pizza Hut and now the new Sonic Burger located just outside of town on the highway. These facilities are kept clean and are well staffed by helpful friendly people.

Marion Reservoir has four areas that have been developed for camping and recreational use. These are Marion Cove, Hillsboro Cove, Cottonwood Point, and French Creek Cove. They provide a mixture of amenities including showers, grills, electric hookups, dump stations, boat ramps, beaches, etc. Though this is a popular camping spot during the summer months there are usually plenty of spots available.

To check conditions of the boating ramps and other possible information needed, check out the USACE Tulsa District web page.

Road Ends in Water

Story/Tip

On the north east side of Marion Reservoir several of the gravel roads have signs indicating that the road ends in water. By following these roads to their termination point you can find wonderful out-of-the-way access to the lake. These are quiet spots in semi-wooded areas that make great primitive camping spots as well as peaceful places to fish.

The US Army Corp of Engineers constructed the dam at Marion which resulted in the formation of the beautiful lake. Though the purpose of the dam is for flood control, a marvelous facility for recreation has been the result. There are 6,200 acres of water surrounded by 6,000 acres of public lands. This should be more than an adequate area to fulfill any of your outdoor needs. The lake is located just north of US Highway 56 between the towns of Marion and Hillsboro -- kind of in the middle of nowhere, but considering how people are stacked up in the city, the middle of nowhere can be quite comforting Just below the spillway ducks can be found as well as other waterfowl.
