Dar: Essential things to see and do

A June 2005 trip to Dar Es Salaam by tembosaba

With things to see and do and great African music and nightlife, there is more to Dar than its dull city centre.

This strangely named hotel is clean and very friendly. It is an excellent value at less than $10 a night and located away from tourist hot spots and Western hotels. Sinza is an affluent African area of the city with many lively bars and excellent local food. It is a great, friendly place to say. A taxi from the bus station or airport or regular buses go to Sinza, where Vatican City hotel is a landmark.

Attraction

This is an air-conditioned bar in the centre with good decor and snacks. It's good for a quick drink, but the lack of an atmosphere means that it's not somewhere to stay for an evening.

Attraction

A quiet beach not far out of the bustling centre. Coco beach is beautiful at sunset, especially when watching the dhows and ferries cross to Zanzibar. Get there by catching a dala dala from near the central post office or a taxi, and negotiate a return fare no more than 10-15'000 tsh.
