Germany's Rhine Valley wine towns

A small town called Bickelston is located amongst the vineyards about 30 minutes outside Friedburg. The town of approximately 400 residents produces some of the world's finest wines, and almost every resident is involved in some way with the local wine co-op.

Quick Tips:

The featured event is a March Champagne, or, as they call it, Secc Festival, where the champagne flows. There are only two restaurants in town and a dozen B&Bs.

Best Way To Get Around:

It's best to rent a car, as bus service is very poor and rail connections do not exist.
All accommodations are B&B, except the Winery Hotel, which has a small restaurant and about eight rooms. The B&B we stayed at was Sue's, which was great and cheap, 7 days at 175 Euro for two.

Restaurant

This is strictly a local experience, with an outdoor garden, decent food, and great wine. The staff will bend over backwards if you buy them and the chef a glass of wine. In the evenings we were invited to sit at the locals-only table (the one without a cloth on it by the entrance). The more sophisticated guests left the wine, music came out, and the fun began. They were just nice folks.

There is no experience like strolling down country lanes and through small vineyards, watching the dedicated attend to the pruning, shaping, harvesting, and, of course, continual tasting of the fruits of the vine. The path and roadways are lightly traveled and literally wind and twist their way along the valley and hillsides from one small town to another.

Attraction

There are numerous small wine bars open seasonally in the fall and spring for a couple of months, plus every restaurant is a wine center. Just stroll and partake. You will find smiles and some over-consumption but a mild jovial manner.

Attraction

When you have more pride than profit in mind, people have a glow. Now, it could be the wine, but I would say the pride in the historic town product of fine wines passed from generation to generation being shared with peple is worth the visit. Almost every third house has their own legal still for producing their own Schnapps, so do try some.

Story/Tip

I never thought that wine could be a way of life. The town's main crop is white and red burgundy grapes. These delicate and sweet grapes are the traditional lifeblood of the area. Today in Germany, industrialization has diminished rural life, but in this area, you will still find a dedication to making the best in wines and anything else in liquid form.
