Visiting places is a wonderful thing. But living in a place and fully immersing oneself in the culture and language is another. Jakarta is a city with a past and is looking forward to its future. Get to know the present Jakarta, where I spent 7 months.

For Southeast Asians, it is not a major adjustment to live in Jakarta because of the Asian traditions and culture that are almost familiar with other neighboring countries. Jakarta is fast becoming a major city with its glorious skyscrapers but it still preserves its tropical ambiance with trees found in major highways around the capital. Monas is the mark of Jakarta. The golden torch-like monument is a symbolic spot of the city which represents freedom. Monas is at the center of the Merdeka Square where the central station of Indonesia’s train, the US Embassy, other embassies and important institutions are located. A few blocks away is the Grand Mosque, or the Istiqlal Mosque, and across it is a Catholic cathedral.. Take the tollway and you'll get to see all of Jakarta. You will find that there are a number of monuments around Jakarta. It will take you in the northern, western, southern and eastern part of Jakarta. The tollway also leads to the international airport which is found in the outskirts of Jakarta. The northern part is where Ocean Park and the port area are found. Ancol and Pasar Ikan are great destinations for shoppers and visitors. The southern area is a promising one, with the restaurant rows and shopping areas and where Blok M and Kebayoran Baru are found. In the heart of the city is the commercial business districts, with its skyscrapers and posh hotels along Jalan Thamrin and Jalan Sudarman. Don't forget to go to Jalan Surabaya, where antiques shops are found.

Quick Tips:

Local newspapers and hotel magazines have listings of local events and must-see places. Try to visit the tourism office, or check their websites for updates. Magazines are also a good source of information on gigs and other happenings in the metropolis. The malls are also venue of various live performances and events. When you are in Jakarta, don’t miss the bargain places for good shopping finds.

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis are just a phone call away. Take the Blue Bird taxi at all times. They have VIP cars that costs just a few rupiahs more as well as taxis at low prices. Their drivers are trustworthy and polite. There are buses plying various routes, but they are jam-packed, so it is advisable for travellers to take the taxis instead. Motorcycles are dangerous, so avoid them at all cost. You may also take a becak or a tricycle type of vehicle.
It is such an unfortunate incident when I heard that the JW Marriott Hotel was bombed. I frequented this hotel because the general manager was a friend and partner in a worthwhile cause.

I may be blessed to have enjoyed the original grandeur of the hotel when it was newly opened. It’s restaurants and buffet are splendid with the sumptuous food they offer daily.

The spa and activity area is fully equipped and ensures one of an enjoyable and relaxing physical activity. The hotel staffs are courteous and helpful. Rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated ensuring a memorable stay in this luxurious hotel.

I love their buffet. A long table of Japanese food, international cuisines and fresh fruits and mouthwatering desserts is a delight not only to the sight but also to my gustatory taste. Dining in a well-lit and spacious restaurant gives you a view of the green oval across the hotel. That was in 2002. I'd like to go back and see how things are improving in Marriott.

By the way, don't forget the delicious Peking duck in their Chinese restaurant. I remember that time when I spent Thanksgiving with the general manager and his wife. We had a truly appetizing turkey and we had the restaurant all to ourselves.

The acquarium

Seeing the wonders of the sea is an awesome activity. Of course, not everyone can dive under the sea. So it is a safe and great alternative to see the sea beauties up close and personal at Jakarta's Sea World. One thing I would never forget in my visit to the Sea World was that I was amazed when never-before-seen fish flashed before my eyes.

When I walked through the giant aquarium, it felt amazing to have the rays and fishes of various colors and sizes swim overhead. There before me were the glorious treasures the depths of the ocean offers. With all the fishes on display, it felt good to know that our planet is so rich and abundant.

My favorite spot is where they keep the live turtles, which are safe to touch. Our next stop was the dolphin show. Watching them dance and swim in sync, it made me realize how smart creatures they can be. It's absolutely beautiful and enjoyable to be in Sea World. Of course, I wouldn't miss having my picture taken with the dolphins. The rest of the afternoon was spent touring the compound. There were boats available that will take you to the mouth of the sea and will give you a refreshing ride with the wind kissing your face. Restaurants are available if you feel you want to just sit down and take a breather from the overwhelming beauty and activities that abound in the place.
