Nice - Summer and Fall

An August 1994 trip to Nice by superpurd

Quote: Spent two days in Nice as part of a Globus tour. Came back on our own for two days in October of 1994. Nice place to spend a few days, probably a nice (no pun intended) place to live.

Just a very friendly pleasant place to be. The beach is nice, but has pebbles rather than sand, on the beach there are lots of topless bathers of all sizes and shapes. There is a large no vehicle area housing mainly outdoor restaurants that has street entertainers and a very casual atmosphere of fun. Art lovers can visit the Museums of Matisse and Chagall. There are all kinds of short excursions you can make less than an hour away such as Cannes and Monaco. If you want to learn all about perfumes you can go to a tour through a factory at Grasse.Quick Tips: If you are soft and like to be comfortable you may wish to take an air mattress to the beach as the pebbles there, while smooth and r...Read More

Our room had a T.V., air conditioning, full bath tub, bidet, and a balcony. It had a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea. It was a 4 star hotel and we had no problems at all with either the room or the service. Location is excellent as it is a block from the beach and close to many restaurants, bars etc.

Our tour group ate here on our way to a tour of Monaco. It is somewhat out of the way and as it is located on the highway well above sea level offers an excellent view of the Mediterranean. I had coq -au -vin while my wife had a turkey dish with salads, a choice of excellent looking desserts and the compulsory french wine. (not really compulsory) Would consider it a 4 star meal and the view was spectacular.

Musee Matisse de Nice

Attraction | "Musée Matisse"

Quote:
The museum is at least a mile up a fairly steep hill from the beach area of the city. An interesting walk but a fairly strenuous one. Outside the museum are old ruins of some previous structure. Apparently Matisse lived in the museum building. The paintings cover various stages of his career and there are a lot of biographical information available by the paintings. As usual for Matisse the colours in his paintings are bright and spectacular. Well worth the trek, but if you don't want or need the exercise, take the bus.

Musée Marc Chagall du message biblique

Attraction | "Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall"

Before you enter the building you will see (if paying attention) large mosaics in the garden. Inside there is a variety of works, stained glass, huge canvas works, as well as paintings. There are a lot of paintings with biblical themes on display. We had seen elsewhere stained glass work done by Chagall and were quite impressed. As we had seen lots of his works in other museums, we felt that a lot of the items on display here were not his best. Worthwhile if you are interested, but not spectacular

Attraction | "Wandering around Nice"

Quote:
Nice is a great little city to wander on foot. We always felt very safe there. At the beach you can wander on the rocks on the beach or the walkway behind it. Topless bathing is allowed and is fairly prevalent. We were there in the middle of October and it was still warm enough to swim although the water was fairly cold. (OK for us hardy Canadians) The area by the beach has parks where you can wander and see the sights. Their is a large pedestrian only area housing dozens of restaurants, bars etc. Street entertainers are everywhere including one quite obnoxious fellow we saw who was a 3rd rate flamethrower. I think he drank as much of the alcohol he put in his mouth as he spit out in flames. ...Read More
